4594 is also called The Sombrero Galaxy. It is a unbarred spiral galaxy in Virgo
. It is about 28 mega light years away. It has a bright nucleus and a large central bulge. Its inclined disc shows a prominent dust lane. Its apparent magnitude is + 9.0 and is easily visible with smaller telescopes
. Its nucleus is classified as a LINER (low ionization nuclear emission region). Some LINER nuclei may be powered by hot, young stars found in star formation regions. Other LINER nuclei may be powered by active galactic nuclei (highly energetic regions that contain supermassive black holes
). A supermassive black hole was discovered in its core in the 1990's. It is estimated to house between 1200-2000 globular clusters. Its distance is estimated to be about 29.6 +/- 2.5 million light years away.
