Hi
I live in Newham, East London and there is a serious lack of astronomical activities in this area. The two societies nearest to me are Loughton (LAS) and Flamsteed (FAS). Loughton mainly covers the Essex area and Flamsteed is based at Royal Observatory Greenwich.
I am thinking of starting an astronomy society in Newham, which will be very cleverly named: Newham Astronomical Society (NAS). Initially, we would gather in a pub or a bar for fortnightly/monthly meetings, in which we would share all the major astronomy news and talk about everything related to astronomy. I also have a few observation sites in mind. We could start with very basic equipment such as 10x50 binoculars.
If you live in or around Newham (East London) area and would be interested in joining this society, please reply to this post or email me directly: yousaf dot hassan at gmail dot com. Everyone, from novice to amateur astronomer, is welcome!
Also, if you have any suggestions as to where else I should post this message, please let me know.
Regards
Yousaf

Hi Yousaf, welcome to the forums!
that is a good idea and nice of you to start one.I like the clever name :P
What I would do is setup a group here Astronomy Forums - Social Groups, and have your Newham Astronomical Societyin there along with East London, England. You should get a fair number of people over time joining the site, and the group and finding you from Google/Bing or similar search engines.
good luck
Cheers!

Yousaf,
Like Admin said, set up a group here on Astronomy Forum. Also visit the stargazers and the BBC Astronomy forums and announce your intentions on them.
