I believe they started as a huge rock metal core greater than the mass
of the earth that was capable of gathering their huge gas atmospheres
through great gravity. Gas by itself does not possess enough gravity.

You have just "proved" that stars can't be made of mostly hydrogen and
helium. Nice work. (Looks up as the sun winks out, followed by stars
switching off later tonight. Oh dear.)

Get enough hydrogen and helium together and you get plenty of gravity,
believe me.

When the universe was really really small, the density was much much
larger than today.

I can also recommend the book. It's small enough to be easily read, but the
contents are pretty heavy going. I stop and think about the ideas a lot.
I've been through it a few times, and gain a little more each time. I'm
also trying to gain some understanding of the 'particle zoo', which I've
been keenly interested in through the news, but am getting much better
understanding from the recorded Cal Tech lectures I've come by.
