Easy stuff before moving onto the harder stuff :-)

I need something easy to ease me through the pain of losing the entire
weekends files to a hard disk crash

Benylin (original) works a treat. As do Pentel N90 marker pens.
Commiserations. Have you considered using a live backup? Some disc drives
    actually come with that option.

I will probably regret asking, but how does a Pentel help?

The drive is normally backed up automatically. However, it's a 160Gb
capacity unit in a caddy. The period I lost was when I popped it
home, put some images on it and couldn't read it when I got it back to
    work.

Turns out that it was the caddy that was at fault and I needn't have
lost anything after all. Never mind - I can take some more pictures
    ;-)

One of our local computer bits suppliers offers a service for recovering
files from 'dead' drives for a very reasonable stipend. I'm sure you could
find one in almost any neighbourhood.
