    Default Exposure advice wanted.

I have an SLR with no functioning lightmeter and a 500mm mirror lens (f8
I think) plus a 2x tele converter the camera is loaded with 800 asa film
and I will add a Baader film filter.

What sort of exposure times should I be using for the Transit assuming I
    can see it?

    Do you know 'Astrexpo' ?
It's a small software from M. Covington which is able to answer to your
    question.
    You will find it here
    http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/...astrosoft.html

In your case, the software answers 1/4000 second (I suppose the
teleconverter doubles the exposure time). I think that you can try some
different speeds between 1/1500 and 1/4000 second.

rough guess of 1/1500th based on what i've done so far....
    f7.1 - f10 @ 1/200, iso 100 gives a fairly detailed though slightly dark
image on the 10d with the equiv of a 1000mm lens. so multiplying up for the
iso800 gives around 1/1500th. you would need to bracket either side though,
possibly by a couple of stops to make sure.
