Default UK Retailer with good display stock

    Beginner looking for advice.

Ideally I'd go to a club night to see some telescopes in action, but either due to the weather or other commitments this has not been very fruitful so far. The other alternate, at least to handle would be a retailer, would be retailer display stock, any recommendations?

There doesn't appear to much near the North-West so it would be a case of taking the opportunity should I be in the area.

Thanks, I've not seen them mentioned or hit them with searches and there web shop front is very poor and couldn't find an address easily. It does not inspire confidence, however good they are.

Tring Astro would not be too difficult to get to, there web site suggests a large display and I might be able to get to Rother valley in May.

Both of those are warehouse operations as far as I can tell.

Yes many of the good astro retailers in the UK don't keep much in stock but order it in when needed.

I don't know the NW, but a few suggestions here. Could you get to one of the Star parties up that way. Kielder or Galloway, though I think their spring ones have already passed.

There is the Kelling Heath Star Party Northern Norfolk coming up in April, bit of a long way for you to go, but you could book a pitch or a chalet and stop a couple of nights, its a great event and then you can not only wander around the pitches and see what people have and also on the Saturday retailers turn up with astro kit for sale. It's a great atmosphere and would be well worth doing. Many people travel great distances to do to this. I come up from Kent.

12th to Thursday 19th April (with the main weekend being 13th and 14th).

Thanks for the information, Kelling is quite a way, but then so are Kielder and Galloway. I have looked at Star Party events, but sometimes the information is sparse or the events are no longer being run. I'll think about it, let;s hope the weather improves a bit by then.

I did find a the North West Astronomy Festival in June at Runcorn, which is a possibility.

Just a warning. If you miss the April Star party at Kelling, the September one is almost impossible to book, unless you attended the previous year as it is so popular.

If you can get yourself to a Star Party, it's what I would suggest as very best, as you can get a feel for the different types of scopes and what you can do with them. If you're free this weekend, Astrocamp is taking place in the Brecon Beacons - and there are a number of pitches free.
A nice feature is that they keep an area (called 'the common') free for people to gather with their scopes, so it's easy to mingle and look through a variety of scopes set up for visual observing. You can also see the sort of setup used by people who prefer imaging. In addititon, Astrocamp organises a number of talks at the Village Hall, about 1/2 mile walk from the campsite, and an awesome raffle! We were there a couple of years ago and there's a great atmosphere across the whole weekend, regardless of the weather. We're really looking forward to this weekend again.

There'll be a few people with limited levels of 'kit', and some without any, so don't worry about not having a scope yet.

We've been to the NW Astro fest for the last few years (the last couple of times representing our club as well as attending the talks). Previously it's been a 2-day event, but this year it's just on the Saturday (7th July, for the record). There certainly will be some vendors there, Tring Astro have traditionally supported the event, so hopefully they'll be there this year as well. If that's relatively local for you, it's worth getting along.

In addition, it is well worth your while checking out observing evenings at local Astro Societies, Liverpool AS have them weekly at their observatory site in North Widnes.

If that's not local for you, you can check out other events using this page with a map.
