I have a T3i as well and the first thing that I recommend that you do is get BYEOS for your imaging. It lets you control just about everything camera related (and then some) from your laptop. It is well worth the $50. Another recommendation is the Astro Photography Tool ($23). Trying to image using the small LCD on the camera is doable but, if you're a masochist. I use both, depending on what it is I am trying to do. They both also have demos so you can try before you buy. And while I you're at it, take a look at Sequence Generator Pro ($100).

    Good luck and have fun.

I can really recomend APT. Easy to use and cheap And futureproof so you can controll many more cameras if you want to upgrade later on.

I found this site helpful as it gives times for len's cropped and full frame.
    https://www.lonelyspeck.com/lonely-s...graphy-lenses/

I like to keep times around 5-7 seconds and iso around 800 with the lens wide open at f1.8 on my 35mm on my D5300

I would agree with buying BackyardEOS. I took a pic of Orion using the small screen at the back of my Canon t3i but when I uploaded it onto my laptop there was a lot of trailing that I could not see on the camera. What a waste of my time doing it with only the camera, when I use Byeos everything is much better as well as having the controls you can see any effect on the laptop as it happens.

With a wide angle lens and that series camera use liveview zoomed in on a bright star to focus. I'd use your smallest f-stop. I'd use iso 2500 at about 15-25 seconds in bulb mode. Experiment. If your steady you can just use the shutter button. If not use a remote release. Have fun out there!
