Default Newbie wanting help getting a telecope

Would it be possible for someone to help me find a decent telescope?

I want to be able to look at distant planets and stars and just explore but i don't have a clue what to get.

I've only ever had cheap less than £50 scopes but i was hoping of getting something good this time around £200 - £300.

this one caught my eye http://www.amazon.co.uk/Everything-S...pr_product_top

    any advice would be great

    Hi Mossi,

Welcome to the forum. You've come to the right place to ask your questions. Thanks for including your budget number in your question, it makes answering easier.

For a beginner scope, one that is both powerful and easy to use, I would recommend a 200mm Dobson. They fall right in the middle of your price range and they will give you the most punch for the £.

Welcome to the forum. That was a quick decision, but I think a good one. If I could only have one scope, it would be a Dob.

Hi, it's great that you're upgrading your scope! But if I were you, I wouldn't buy from Amazon, if that's what your intention is. It would be much better to buy from a place where they can give help you choose, and also give you backup if anything (hopefully it won't) goes wrong with the scope.

One good place is Telescope House, the people there are really helpful, but I'm sure that other folks on this forum will be able to suggest other places too.

I'm NOT a dob guy...been there done that ...BUT I too have to recommend a 6 or an 8 inch Dob ...depending on storage room, transportation requirements etc... Dobs are just very good visual scopes simple to use, comfortable to use Plus they just offer the absolute best "bang" for your hard earned money.. Remember that the whatever scope you buy you will also need eyepieces for and you should be thinking about buying or making an observation chair ASAP ...BUT do not rush out and buy several eyepieces until after you actually use the scope for a few weeks...so leave a little bit of money in your bank account for a month or so so...Then you can go shopping for what you may need
