Lack of a drive may not be too much of a problem, provided you buy a solar
filter for photography rather than visual observing. Photography ND = 4,
Visual filter ND = 5. A solid mount that won't shake is essential.

Typical exposures with ordinary film are around 1/250 to 1/1000 sec. With
visually safe filters, the photographic exposures start getting too long,
e.g 1/30.
