    Default Motorizing the EQ5

My Orion Truetrack motor set for the EQ5 that came with the Bird Jones arrived a couple days ago. It didn't just bolt on. The DEC drive fit perfectly, but the RA was very misaligned. see first photo. I measured the base and the two flat spots it was supposed to rest on and found I only had 3mm of bearing, and one side of the base was rounded, using up two mm.

So I made a plate out of a scrap of stainless to extend the bearing, then I had to file a bit away to get the gears to line up properly.

I hope the photos come up in the right order. Continued below......

    Yup, they did.

The instructions were pretty straight forward. Here is a pic of the gears aligned, and a full pic of the install, before the final adjustments and the cover goes on.

I meant to post a pic of the kit first, but here it is. They supply all the tools except a 1.5mm allen that you need to loosen the drive gear. Adjustment is not very sophisticated, The word crude springs to mind. Close enough is about as much as you can expect. I bet in the higher end mounts the adjustments are more positive.

There is something wrong with the DEC drive. It slips and makes a soft clicking in 8X speed. I need to contact Orion about that. It comes with a battery pack that takes 4 D cells. I am thinking of alternate power supplies. I'll check the junk store for a 6 volt converter.

And I hadn't thought of the cables. The go-to knows how not to tangle them.

I checked out the DEC drive again this morning. In 8x gear it drives forward ok but stalls in reverse with the soft clicking mentioned above. This happens even with the clutch disengaged. Phoned Orion's 800 number and explained the problem. Faxed the invoice, and a new motor is on the way. I wonder if they will replace the whole kit, or just the DEC motor. Time will tell. It won't be here for this evening, for which my chart shows a rare clear sky opportunity.

I picked up an orion dual drive kit to put on my CG5, and found the RA mount plate was also an issue. I was lucky in the the mount had come with the original motors (non-functional-at the time) but I used the gearbox mount plates and motor mount plates to get a correctly se-tup system, I was able to verify tracking only visually but it looked pretty good.(I walked away from it for an hour - the star I'd centered was still near center where I'd left it.) I'll have to see what the imager say's if I ever get a clear sky.
