The eq8 is fine but if one is doing 20-30 min subs then some of those are ruined from pe, i don't know how people manage with long fl scopes

yes, it's the extra capacity primarily and then as you say, it is sturdy. It will have a 130 plus film cameras plus a finder or two which are all DIY conversions. There is the option of making a 180 refractor (the lens being a find!) so to keep that mount for obs only and then to move to a faster controlled mount for satellite imaging etc. I prefer to keep my options open. . The Mesu looks interesting though. . Just to make matters worse I will be receiving an old 8" Meade this week for fun and games. . One never knows where that might end up.

ok it's been a few months many emails and calls and i've already ordered a new mount that's still being built but i've finally worked out what was wrong with the eq8, i swapped the worm bearings over to some cheap ones (don't laugh) haha, from a fidget spinner as it was the only bearing i could find to test.

and now on average i'm at 0.8'' with 0.05'' to 0.6'' low in tracking ,i ran the old worm against an machinist indicator and rotated it and it was out and also sticking a bit. the cheap new bearings has play in them and the shaft fits a little loose and a little slopy on the ball bearings hopefully i can find something more in spec later as there is still a very small rocking left from the worm, the max i can guide is at 1 sec to help reduce the harmonic p.e instead of my normal 2-3 seconds..

sinking some time in the helix nebula i was going to do one sub and go to bed but the stars are round and the night sky is actually pretty superb (above 6-7 should of tried jupiter) and why not! i'll keep going on it and swap out some better bearings on the weekend
