    Default From the ashes...

I got this Vixen GPD mount-head, an EQ5-class, and tripod back in 2003. In 2005, the mount went through a fire...

    legacy.jpg

The mount-head did not survive, and was later set out for the debris pickup. Two young men came by and asked about it, and I told them to take it. I seriously doubt if they ever made use of it, as it would've needed a full tear-down and rebuild. Two or three years ago I started searching for the wooden legs. At the time, I found only two, and so it was since that time, but just the other morning I found the third...

    Vixen wooden legs.jpg

Presently, I have two equatorials and one alt-azimuth, each with metal legs, and candidates for these of wood. Scarce as proverbial hen's teeth these are, and of white oak; after an initial cleaning...

Sanding these down will have to wait until a few repairs are completed. One of the center-legs is intact; a second with a few cracks, a split, and now with the split glued back together...

    repair5.jpg

There's not much to do about the cracks. They will eventually be sanded down, and filled with stain and a clear finish. The third center-leg, however, has required considerable work. Here, the damage has been squared out...

Thanks all. I appreciate it. The one thing that makes this most fortunate is that my late father had asked to use one of the legs for a project. I can't remember which answer I had given him, yea or nay, so that when I found the two, yet could not find the other at the time, I naturally assumed that I had told him yes, and it was scavenged. I had gone out to the "storage hut", as I call it, and there the two were, as I had left them in the past, yet useless without the third. As I stood there, I looked over to my left, and there under a pile of mish-mash, something familiar jutted out. I was floored.

The veneering is completed for that portion of the leg. I do have one more area to treat...

The tips were thoroughly cleaned. They will be carefully reinstalled before any sanding begins...

The braces have been sorted out, cleaned and de-rusted. They'll get a refresher of paint and a clear coat. The threaded insert of one, front-right, had popped out at one point. I have the brace reformed near to that of the others. I'll be using J-B Weld to fasten it back together, in addition to reforming and restoring the binding ability of the insert. Can't have it popping back out when the leg is clamped...

    braces.jpg

Of the six side pieces, two are in need of repair. I've repaired one thus far. Again, here the damage was squared out...

...and epoxy to bind it all together...

    repair2.jpg

    repair3.jpg

...and a piece of red oak...

    ...to complete the repair.

This one, the other one, will need careful planning(or planing?)...
