Default Thinking about upgrading my mount.

    The details;

Currently I have the 6SE with the Nexstar mount.

I'm thinking of going to an 8" SCT at some point or less likely a 9.25"

I know the Nexstar mount will support an 8.

Don't see AP in my near future so it's mainly visual. My backyard and or Neighbors would never allow it.

    But never say never (AP).

I've read about the AVX and it looks like it would work from a spec perspective (30lbs capacity) but reading across forums some people do not like them.

    What advice can you offer?

    Thanks.

One of the mistakes I made over the years was upgrading from a 6 inch SCT to an 8 inch SCT. There was an improvement in viewing ability but nothing to write home about. IMO the 9.25 inch SCT would be a better choice.

The AVX mount generally gets great reviews as an entry level mount for astrophotography. The 30 pound payload is for visual work. For astrophotography 15 to 20 pounds is more realistic. For viewing, I think you will find the AVX mount far superior to the shakey 8/6 SE mount. With its 2 inch legs, the AVX is like the Rock of Gibraltar and can take accidental bumps in the dark of the night without loosing alignments.

Astrophotography, your 6SE OTA is a good match for the AVX and astrophotography. Since you have a 10 inch Dob for viewing why get an 8 inch SCT? Use your 6 inch SCT or get a nice, fast, refractor for astrophotography.

The AVX is an excellent mount, I love mine. But I'm with sxinias on this, I don't see the big improvement in getting the 8"SCT since you have the AD10 and the 6"SCT. I would be much more interested in a short wide refractor.

I have only had my AVX for a few weeks and it is my first non-trivial mount, but -- I do like it a lot. After I got it -- I found out that Explore Scientific makes a mount in the same price range and -- it is Open Source and uses a microcontroller that I am very familiar with -- it is definitely a decent looking mount, but -- doubtful that it is better than the AVX for the money.

I prefer Celestron's alignment to Meade's, but -- I cannot categorically state that it performs better, just that it was super easy and the first goto was spot on. That is not always the case with my Meade, but -- that may be operator error on my part.

If you think you "might" do AP in the future and $899 does not send you packing -- the AVX is a great choice, IMHO.

Another mount to consider is the HEQ5. I've had mine for a year now, and am quite happy with it. I have used it to this point exclusively with my ES ED102 scope. The rated capacity is the same as the AVX. I have done AP with frames up to 90 seconds without guiding. This thead in Cloudy Nights compares the two mounts: https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/5...mount-vs-heq5/.

As a person that is now visual only I do not see the need to overbuy an AP mount. If you look at my signature you will find more than a bit of the full Pinocchio in my post. As a visual only person who is challenged with poor knowledge of the sky goto accuracy and ease of use have driven my choices. A nice complement to your 10 inch dob would be an eight inch SCT but be aware that going from alt/az to equatorial will require a bit of retraining your brain. Having an SE Celestron and migrating to an AVX Celestron will be easy and challenging at the same time. The easy is you already are trained in Celestron eze, so the command tree will be familiar. The challenge is polar alignment requires a different mind set and more discipline, but also becomes second nature after a number of sessions.
The AVX represents a very good value and after a few frustrations learning to think equatorial you should be very happy.

I recall in the past your advice about not getting a big gain in going from 6 to 8.

Yes the 10" Dob is superior visually to either the 6 or 8 inch but it's manual. I like having the GOTO ability in a scope.

    Thanks again for your input.
