Yep! Never did get hold of Celestron, but took it all apart again, and noticed that on the RA motor, there was a real basic little encoder - a black plastic disc with a notch through it at one point, and a “read head” that fit over the disc; I guess it might shine a light through the slot. Anyway, from us testing the motor and such, the slot in the disc was about 90 degrees from the read head.

So I ran it just a tiny bit to get the slot right about realigned, we put the mount back together, I told it to go to a few things so I could make sure it was at least going to the right part of the sky (from a star chart; this was indoors and during the day) then took it back outside and tested it the next time there was a clear night. And there was much rejoicing.

The big bonus of all the grief is that in reading the manual, I discovered the “hibernate” command, so once I had a good alignment (2 stars, plus 2 cal stars) I used that and the next person now doesn’t have to take all kinds of time doing an alignment.

Thanks for reminding me to follow up!
