    Default Help With Exos-2gt

I ordered this mount from B&H, received it last thursday. It's as sturdy as a rock (as has already been mentioned on here).... but...BUT... I'm having a hell of a time with the GoTo.

I have leveled the mount very well, polar aligned with the Polaris hour angle correct, as close to perfectly balanced the telescope as one can get by hand/eye, set date/time to the second, DST off, time zone to CST (W6:00 on this system), lat and long to the nearest minute according to GPS. The problem I have is that EVERY thing I tell it to go to, it misses by about 2 or 3 hours of RA and as much as 10 or more degrees in DEC. Once I correct it using the controls on the handbox to move to the actual object, the tracking is PERFECT...it'll track without any drift for hours... so I KNOW the alignment is spot on. Anyone else seen an issue like this? Am I missing something? Is there like some obscure setting that isn't in the "initial setup"?

I have yet to use mine, but from all my readings it seems that the one-star alignment is by far the best choice. It seems there is some glitch in the software when you try doing two or three star alignments.

Also, make sure that before you start the one star alignment, you are actually starting from the "home" position, which should be having the arrows on the RA and DEC axes lined up. They are not easy to see as they are the same color as the mount, but they are raised (I plan on marking them darker). You have to initially rotate the DEC axis to be able to see through the mount for polar alignment, but before using the controller, you have to return it back to the home position (which then, of course blocks the polar scope).

Also, I've read where in the "setup" of the hand controller, some of the mounts are set up as the South Pole being the default. There also might be a setting in the controller where you need to set the type of mount to "EQ" mode and not "Alt-Az". Weird as it is an EQ mount, but the controller was designed for more than one kind of mount I think.

At lease this is my understanding. Hope this helps.

Oh goodness...where to start. Let's do the easy one first... :-) I already took a sharpie and "blacked" all the arrows and even put tick marks on the dec axis for turned midway to see through the polar scope.

As for the EQ/Alt-Az... that's an interesting one... it won't let me even check it. I highlight Az/EQ in the setup and hit the select button and ..... NOTHING. It won't go into that setting. Same thing with the Sky/Land setting. However, I believe it IS in the EQ mode because when skewing it skews as an EQ should. And when it's tracking, WHICH IT DOES VERY WELL, it tracks as an EQ should... ie the Dec never changes, only the RA.

Here's an interesting note though. I just checked the celestial position of the moon in Starry Night and on the mount ...

    Starry Night:
    RA: 4h 52.7m
    Dec: 16deg 44.2'

    Exos-2
    RA:4h 48m 35s
    Dec: 17deg 18' 22"

    Who's right?

Hmmm...you got me. I'll be setting my scope up soon...indoors anyway because I'm dealing with too much snow and sub-zero temps for now. But...I can go through a polar alignment and slew to objects in an indoor simulation (that I can confirm with SkySafari Plus 5 on my smartphone). I should be able to tell if the mount gets close enough to where the objects should be if I were outdoors.

Maybe something is whacky with your controller. Call B&H and see what they say? Maybe they'll send you a new hand controller.

Yeah. That's where I'm at. They directed me to Explore Scientific (US importer for Bresser). So I have a support email out to them. If I don't hear back from them by tomorrow, I'll give 'em a call.

I appreciate your brain efforts though.

Lance at ES has been super about customer service with other ES products I bought from them. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the one you hear back from.

I've actually talked to Lance on their live chat. He sits this was out of his realm and referred me to Greg. I'm waiting for a response from Greg.

Did you collimate (center) the polar scope?? It's a tedious 30 minute process, but necessary. Only have to do it once.

    Here's how I polar align.

I rotate the mount in RA so that the counterweight bar follows an imaginary line from Polaris to Kochab. End of the bar points to Kochab.

Adjust the mount in Alt/Az so that Polaris is on the first hash mark closest to the center. The little circle is the position Polaris was in in the late 90's.

Re-home the mount and do a one star alignment using the star closest to 0░ declination. I then do a sync to object on the first couple of objects I observe. As the night goes on, you may have to do another sync to object.

Thanks Scott... I did see your post with this same info earlier, but forgot. I wasn't aware that the alignment circle in these is so out of date. Kochab is a little hard to see for me at this time of the year. I don't have a dark sky area right now, and the neighbors house sits right below Polaris..... and..... right now, Kochab is down from Polaris. LOL BUT That a whole lot easier than figuring out the rings on the mount to set the hour angle. WAY easier. I have to remember this method. I did align the scope tonight... a little roughly, not as precise as the last time, and tried a 3 star alignment. My stars were Betelgeuse, Alpheratz, both of which were drastically off until I centered them, and then third was Polaris. That caused a problem. It couldn't get to Polaris. For whatever reason it wanted to turn the scope upside down and go past the horizon... at which point it just sat there pushing, then rebounding back up until it beeped and stopped. I did do a sync though to M42. Not sure it helped any.

Have you tried a one star alignment? I have read far too many complaints that the software in the hand controller does not do two or three star alignments very well and it ends up throwing everything off, yet many of those same people claim success with a one star alignment. Sadly, without any means to connect to a computer there is no way to "update" the controller either, if they were to come out with a fix.
