So talked to Lance at ES again today. He got Greg on the phone and we decided that when I get home from work I need to see what my firmware version is on the handbox. It's probably an old firmware and they're going to RMA it. Hopefully that'll get me squared away.

Sadly, without any means to connect to a computer there is no way to "update" the controller either, if they were to come out with a fix.
That'll be my next attempt.... as soon as we lose the cloud cover we've acquired :-/ But looks like ES is going to RMA the hand controller...it might have an old firmware. Won't know for sure until I get home from work. I don't remember what version it says it is.

Where exactly IS the computer? Is it in the main motor box? Or is it actually in the hand controller? Being a relative newbie, I was wondering... are the hand controller completely proprietary? Can one be plugged into the motor box of another brand? etc

ES has awesome customer service. I had Alt & Az controls that were getting sloppy on my Twilight I mount. I could have taken it apart and fixed it myself. They sent me a brand new mounthead and double checked the new mounthead before sending it out to me. Let us know how it works for you.

This is my first EQ mount with drive motors and GoTo. I mean I've had EQ mounts, and understand alignment, etc, but I was excited to get this thing working. I had read mixed reviews... but mostly it seemed any issues were one's that I knew B&H would warranty, or user missteps. the rest all seemed pretty acceptable. You can imagine my disappointment when I KNEW my alignment was good, my lat and long were good, date/time good, etc... and the damn thing couldn't throw a rock at the ground and get a hit. My heart sank.

Are you sure you're aligning on the correct star?

I thought I replied to this but I don't see it....

Whatever I put it on, it tracks like a hawk. With my 17mm eyepiece, the moon fills all but a little circle around outer edge of the view. Over 2 hours it stayed right there. I'm pretty certain that tells me I was aligned on Polaris, and pretty accurately. ;-)

Oooo. Don't use Polaris as your alignment star. Use whichever star in the list that is closest to a declination of 0.

What I mean is that I was polar aligned, and Polaris hour angle accurately setup.

The computer is in the handcontroller, thus it controls everything. It just plugs into the motor box. Being a computer, like all computers some have glitches. I think a replacement will solve your problem. Just make sure all your settings are correct.
