Default After a hard choice i finally got my new mount!

Ive been go back and forth between the AVX and the ZEQ25GT. I have been wanting the AVX for quite some time now and have planned on getting it then i found Paul's videos on the ZEQ25GT and was quite tempted to grab that one instead. I keep having such a difficult time deciding. Both appear to be excellent mounts but at the end of the day i ended up getting the AVX, ive wanted it so long i had a hard to pulling myself away from getting one. So i grabbed that.

    Here she is.
    20140214_091759.jpg
Initial thoughts at that the mount is pretty beefy. Its sort of a big bigger than the pictures let on. For fun i extending the legs all the way and im 6'3" and this thing was TALL. Wont ever need to use it at full height, keep it lower and more stable is going to be the ticket. Honestly the mount is a bit beefier and heavier than my mind was letting on but its not bad.

Did a dummy alignment in the house and all appears to be working. Seems like a great mount. One tiny hangup. I think it must have been missing a washer. When i tightened the hold down for the mount head underneath the tripod... the head still was loose...hmmmm It appeared the threads bottomed out in the mount hear before it could grab the tripod. A simple washer fixed that so no big deal.

What sucks now is my ST80 Isnt near heavy enough to balance with the included 11lb weight. I need a lighter one and after searching it appears the 7.5lb one Orion sells for their astroview and skyview mount will fit this just fine... I Also need some dovetail bars, my ST80's dovetail bar is not very long and with my DSLR on the scope i cannot balance in DEC either, if i do the scope is hanging on with one of the two hold downs. Longer bars will remedy this, i also plan on getting tube rings for my SLT130 OTA so i can properly put it on this mount and rotate it.

This hand controller has many more features for this GEM than my SLT hand controller has, but the basic layout is the same so it should be easy to pick up the new one.

Very Nice! That was a tough decision between two excellent mounts. You really couldn't go wrong either way though.

(BTW: No fair reading the instructions. )

Hey Brett great choice. I've had my AVX since late August and I think it's great. Clear skies.

Ive had mine for a few months now and its amazing how accurate it can be. One thing to keep an eye on is the screws on the alt and az clutches. I was out one night and aiming at targets for drift alignment and the clutch handle came right off. We all know how hard it is to find that tiny screw in the grass when its pretty dark outside. Fortunately I had the power of the big light on the Power tank. Getting it back on correctly was a little tricky. After I put it back on, there were points where it would bind with the mount so I had someone on here post a pic of the clutch Engaged and off. Now I routinely keep an eye on these little screws. The only other complaint would be that I have no idea where the cover for the polar scope is. It must have fell off one night either setting up or breaking down. Ive looked for it but have not found it but thats no buggy. The most important part is that this mount just works and works well.

Congrats on getting your new mount!

Once you get a hand of the alignment process and everything you'll be off and running in no time. There is a post on here somewhere where we went through a pretty lengthy discussion of best practices for alignment on the AVX. If I find it I'll toss a link on here.

    Hello brettecantwell

    Congratulation on your new mount.

You wrote "Initial thoughts at that the mount is pretty beefy. Its sort of a big bigger than the pictures let on.", which got me to thinking, how much bigger than my CG5 GT it is. I was baffled when I found out that it had same weight, and as far as I can measure same height. I thought that the difference would be similar to the difference on my EQ5 & EQ6 Pro mounts.

I am in no doubht that motors, tracking, guiding and goto, is way better than my CG5.

    Good luck with your mount.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on the VX too - although after a rather bad experience with an eBay purchased cg5 I'm a little nervous!
