Because of the weather I haven't been able to do more than about an hour's worth of DSO imaging since my last post on this topic. I've been doing planetary/lunar stuff instead. However, the weather is now improving so I will be back to DSO's as soon as I finish this years planetary work.

I will be able to post some PHDLab results during April (hopefully)

I've just been fitting my belt drive mod, but have stopped after fitting the DEC belt.
I became concerned about the clearance with the cover, it seemed *very* close, the head of the 9 tooth pulley and the pin for idler both stand proud by 4mm which is exactly the depth left in the cover after fitting the spacer.
I put the spacer and cover back on to test it, and indeed if I tighten down the cover screws the head of the 9 tooth pulley is rubbing against the cover
If I slacken off the cover screws the rubbing sound stops, but this doesn't seem right. I checked and re-checked that the pulley is seated as far down at it can go on the motor shaft and the measurement of 5mm from the base of the pulley to top of the motor housing is correct as per the instructions.

I think I'll contact Rowan Astronomy tomorrow, but I wondered if you'd had this issue or similar Phil?

    Cheers,
    Richard

To update my previous post, in case anyone is following along at home, I spoke to Dave at Rowan Astronomy.

He really couldn't have been more helpful, great customer service.

It appears the depth of the recess in the mount into which the DEC and RA motor housings are bolted in my mount is 14mm, rather than the expected/standard 15mm for which the mod kit is designed. The expected height of the 9 tooth pulley above the spacer plate is 3mm and of course mine is 4mm. Here then is the culprit of the rubbing pulley on the cover.

Dave is sending some spacer washers and longer screws to sit between the motor and motor mounting plate, which will drop the motor down by 2mm and create the required clearance.

Some great news is that I have clear skies here tonight, so even with only one motor modded with a belt, I've loosened the cover to prevent any rubbing and got the mount out for a try. My DEC backlash is *massively* reduced Usually I see a pronounced sawtooth in the DEC guiding PHD graph, especially following a dither operation, the DEC can wander up to a pixel over 30+ seconds before unwinding. Now following a DEC dither, the graph just snaps back down

I'm imaging at 45 degrees DEC which would usually equate to an RMS of about 0.18 for my setup, it's currently chugging along at 0.08-0.11. Measuring FWHM of some subs also shows an improvement, I average about 2.3, the first couple I've measured have come in at 2.03.

Adding the RA belt into the mix can only improve things I think, and I'm sure with the great help of Dave at Rowan Astronomy this little niggle with the cover clearance will be sorted.

    Happy bunny

Dave should be ecstatic. This thread yielded him 3 sold kits! I just ordered the EQ6 kit myself.

Hi Richard - no I didn't have that problem (fortunately) - everything fitted perfectly from the get-go. Glad to hear you are up and running (and enjoying the quietness...?) - it's great to have pretty much zero backlash from those spur gears...

My PE and guiding has improved too but it's hard for me to quantify the improvement at the moment.

The washers and longer screws arrived today from Dave at Rowan Astronomy, less than 24 hours after I contacted him
I'll fit them tonight and also complete the mod with the RA belt.
Last nights test was with only the DEC side modded (certainly quieter), and guiding was noticeably improved in the DEC axis. I've got PHD logs from before and from last night to analsye when I get a chance.
    I'll post the results.

Following this thread with interest, particularly if anyone does the EQ6 mod. Are these same kits distributed in the States?

I don't think this particular kit is sold in the US but they ship worldwide. I just ordered an EQ6 kit for my Atlas last night. Fedex shipping with the kit and tool comes to just over $200 in my case and I'm located in Texas. I imagine I'm going to give hypertuning it a go as well since it's going to be apart.
