    Thanks Paul,

Very informative! I now have some knowledge of a mount other than mine.

Thanks Alan, the nice thing about equatorial mounts is that they all operate on the same basic mechanical principles. It's just a matter of price point and expected usage that differentiates them all. I certainly wouldn't expect to have to modify or upgrade a Paramount or a AP1600GTO....I kind of expect to with a entry level EQ mount....

Cheers and the best of the Holidays,

Merry Christmas to you too Paul!

BTW, I did have a Japanese,1962 GEM mounted, 3" refractor with slow motion controls on both axis. It even had provisions for it to be motorized, but that was beyond me at 12 although I did make good use of it.

Retailed for about $300 then and I just calculated its present value to be $2,000. I never realized how good it was, I wish I still had one like it as a third scope.

    Digressing.....soooo sorry!

Paul, thank you very much for your interesting and extremely informative posts!

I was looking for a light, portable mount that could allow me some grab 'n go AP with my 70mm compact apo. Well, after reading your posts, your secret mods and your comments I can tell you that my search is over and my mount is on its way... :-D

Can't wait to bring it under the stars, even though I'm afraid I'll have to wait a bit since these days the weather is terrible down here.
During the wait I'm already preparing all the stuff I need to put your mods into practice so I just ordered some 2-part epoxy ;-)

One question though: since I don't have my mount in my hands yet and cannot determine it myself, could you please specify the size of the RA knob lock you used to replace the original one?

Thanks once again and I hope to be back soon with some images.

    Ciao,
    Piero

The knobs shipped with the mount are kind of 'chunky', and are approximately 30mm wide. The problem is, they are very difficult to tighten because of the way they are tapered. I use a 38mm wide 'Shear Loc' knob which I press fit onto a 8x20 stainless steel cap screw. It's much easier to tighten in normal use, and especially when you have to wear gloves.

Bottom line is you can apply a bit more torque to the RA clutch to keep your OTA from slipping.

If you really want to lock it up, you could always replace the stock knob/screw with a plain allen screw and tighten it with a key, same with a normal 8mm bolt and wrench. That wouldn't 'look pretty'..but it will do the job. You'd just have to be careful not to overtighten it, because the lock screws up against a small brass bushing at the bottom of the bore...I imagine it may 'mushroom' out a bit if overtightened and you want to avoid that.

Oh..might as well do the lower leg mod too: Easy way to remove play in lower tripod legs?

Have a ton of fun with the new mount, you will be very happy with it once you get it all tightened up, it really is solid once the mods are done.

    Best,

    Paul

That is great information. The question I have, is where do you get a 60mm Borg scope! I Google Borg scopes and find next to nothing. I seen what you produce with your setup, and definitely looks like something I might want to try.

Hi, they're very popular in Japan, too bad we don't live there... Here's a link to the US distributor: AstroHutech

They're also pretty well known for modding cameras also..

    Hi Paul,

just saw on the web that my Pro mount has been delivered, can't wait to put my hands on it tonight... :-)

I have another question for you "Wizard of Modz" :-): have you thought about using 10 1.2V NiMH rechargable batteries instead of the 8 1.5V ones?
Do you have any suggestions or ideas about it? Is there room inside the battery compartments for another AA cell?

Of course I could use an external battery pack connected to the 12V external socket but I'd like to keep the dangling things at a very minimum

Also, as I understand, the batteries inside their compartments are used as part of the counterweight, so it would be probably better to keep them in their place.

    Thank you.

    Ciao,
    Piero
