Thumbs up iEQ45 RA drive belt mod

When it's rainy or cloudy, instead of wasting my time eating or reading or sleeping...I 'Inventificate' stuff. Here's my latest waste of sunlight. It's the part iOptron forgot (along with any other mount with a cogged RA drive belt). It reduces/eliminates belt slack, much like a timing belt tensioner in a automotive engine. I wouldn't dream of starting an engine with a timing belt w/out a tensioner in place, so I had to have one on my mount..lol.

Anyway, it works, and it works enough to see a difference in graphs, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Here's a link to the images of my recent creation: Astronewb's iEQ45 RA drive belt mod. - a set on Flickr

Thanks for looking and not laughing too loud,

    Paul

Good news Stew, they do have an adapter for the CGEM mounts, and the TDM's fit anything, it's just the encoder adapters that are different.

    Keep on with the tinking...!

Very cool Paul. The proof is in the graph and it is measurably better! You should call iOptron and tell them you want to be on their engineering and design team!

Thanks for the compliment Chuck, but I don't think they can afford to add $3.50 to the cost of the mount... Besides, they'de have to create a new position for me - "Chief Inventificator". Actually, the difference is quite small to most people, but it's huge to an astro-imager, gives you more room for normal errors...lol.

    Best,

    Paul

Paul, I noticed that the iEQ45 can come with an optional modified clutch. Why isn't that standard?

For all intents, it is standard on all the Version 2 mounts Chuck. The early mounts had four (4) locking knobs on the DEC axis, made for a secure axis, but very difficult to adjust for balance in DEC because of drag. This became a common complaint among users, so iOptron pretty quickly developed the current style, which is just a single locking lever for the DEC axis.

Because of stocking issues, iOptron had both models available, so had to let the consumers know the difference, so they coined the phrase 'modified clutch'

With the intro of the iEQ30, iOptron standardized on the same hand controllers for the iEQ30 and 45, the 8407 controller.

So, you have the iEQ45, std DEC lock knobs (clutch) and 8406 controller.

You have the iEQ45 , modified DEC lock knob (clutch) and 8406 controller.

And the current model iEQ45 Version 2, with modified DEC lock knob (clutch) and 8407 controller.

Some dealers have all in inventory, which makes it a little interesting when ordering. Mine is a V2 mount.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

    Best,

    Paul

It does! Thanks Paul. I do find it odd that they still offer the older versions but you do have to use up stock!
