Default Orion AstroView EQ Telescope Mount vs Celestron CG4

I'm looking for a good, low cost EQ mount/tripod that is suitable for decent/rough tracking of objects (with the addition of a motor drive). I'm considering the Orion AstroView EQ Telescope over the CG4. It's a bit cheaper than the CG4 and comes with a polar scope, as well. But it has a couple of bad reviews. Also, the single axis drive for RA tracking is about $75 compared to about $135 for the CG4 motor drive. But there are a couple of bad reviews for the AstroView as compared to pretty good reviews of the the CG4. Overall, it's a total of about $300 for the AstroView + motor drive + the included polar scope, and for the CG4 it's about $450 with motor drive and the polar scope. Has nyone ever had experience with the AstroView? I'm leaning towards buying it due to the $150 savings.

    Hi,

You are comparing two different mounts. The CG4 has a payload capacity of 20 pounds while the AstroView EQ has a payload of 12 pounds. The CG4 has a much sturdier tripod too. The CG4 can carry more weight and will provide a more stable viewing platform. It also costs more.

Payload is the weight carried by the mount's dovetail saddle. The counter weight is not included in the calculation.

Weight shouldn't be an issue. I only plan on using my 90mm Mak, and sometimes maybe my 6inch reflector. But as for stability, I'm guessing you are right about the CG4 being more stable due to it's ability to carry more weight, which I'm guessing a mount's load capacity and stabilty are directly related. Thanks for the input.
