    Default Looking for some advice...

I'm looking for some advice in regards to how (or if) to upgrade my old Super Polaris motor drive and handcontroller system. I'm mostly interested in AP and I know that a far more expensive mount will do better. However, the Super Polaris is solid and I want to get the most out of it before considering an upgrade. I couldn't justify a new mount without honing my craft a bit more.

Anyways, I have the original motor drives, though I only use the R.A. GoTo functionality is nice but it's really not a priority for me. I just need good solid tracking. The motors seem to work fine so I have no desire to upgrade them if it's not necessary.

The handcontroller, however, is a slightly different matter. I have the original 1980's Skysensor from Vixen. It's a massive, battery sucking thing that requires complicated code inputs to operate. Really, all I do with it is turn it on and allow it to do the sidereal tracking. It also doesn't have any method for autoguiding.

So here's my question. Is it worth it to attempt to track down an older compatible handcontroller like the Skysensor 2000? Should I attempt to upgrade to something like a GoToNova? My main concern is for the quality of my pictures and I'm wondering if either of those option would provide noticeable gains in either ease of use or tracking accuracy. Are there any options I'm not thinking of?

p.s. I know Vixen no longer makes the Skysensor 2000. Does anybody have one kicking around that they don't need?

I am not familiar with your equipment but it sounds like if you have a tracking motor set up,, goto can be compensated with by just knowing where stuff is at and let the tracking motors do their thing, a good PA and maybe mount tweeking ( strip and regrease, gearmesh adjust,, etc etc ).. others will probably jump in here too...........
