Default Please Help with EQ5 GO TO Upgrade Kit

    Hi to everyone
I am new to astronomy. I been in this hobby for bout 4 month

I just recently purchased an EQ5 GO TO upgrade Kit and having some problems with it.
For some reason when i do star alignment that thing points absolutely into wrong direction some time even to opposite side
not sure what iam doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Here are the steps i take

    * Point my mount to North (I use iPhone compass)
    * Adjust my EQ 5 mount, make sure everything is balanced

I also prepared to travel if some one willing to show me. I live in Melbourne, Brighton

    Thank you

First off welcome to the forum!

I live in the northern hemisphere so I may be entirely off here.....

But shouldn't you be pointing the scope south?

Perhaps another Aussie member can jump in to confirm.

Gordon is right, the RA axis will need to point south, and the electronics will need to know that you are in the southern hemisphere. Also, make sure that your time zone and daylight saving time information are entered correctly. Beware of the date format: most mounts require that the date be entered in American format (mm/dd/yyyy).

    Things to check...

Is the tripod oriented so the "N" leg is South? It should be.

Does your iPhone adjust for your local magnetic variation? You want true south, not magnetic south.

Have you done your polar alignment? I can't help you there - you'll need a sothern hemisphere person for that. It needs to be done before you start your star alignment.

Are you moving the mount to the Home position? The star alignment must start from the Home position, since that is its only reference point when it starts. The more accurate your Home position, the more accurate your star alignment will be.

Home position is where the RA movement is centered, so the counterweight shaft is at its lowest point, and the Dec movement has the scope pointed at the south pole, i.e. parallel to the RA axis.

It is the position in which you always see an EQ mount oriented in advertising photos.

Iam not sure if there is such an option except you have to type in your time zone which is +10 (eye twitching)
i have done polar alignment but that thing still points totally opposite to where it suppose to point (eye twitching again)
