    Default Mount frenzy

I have made or in the process of making the decision to order another mount , I have been pretty happy with the little ol CG/5 entry level mount. I am going to hyper tune him as well as change out his saddle.
I am kinda intrigued about the Ioptron ieq45...I have beat up every article on this mount (read)....and there is quite a bit of print over at CN , and none really is bad...it has some nice features.

I am looking at Losmandy , CGEM , Eq-6....don't want to spend many thousands on a mount , Losmandy only runs on battery power...dont like that , mostly I set up at home.

Gosh , the argument between Orion and Celestron is like Chevy and Ford...heck , I own both of them...

Yesterday ,our friend Uncle Rod made a lengthy thread on his blog about the EQ-6....he did a good nuts and bolts article on it with his own style...its a good thread for potential mount buyers to read.

I dont know if anyone here has any hands on experience with the new Ioptron...but if you are out there , please chime in.

I did call them for technical questions on the mount , a real person answered and I got a ton of questions answered...here is some thing way cool ok , if you want to use the mount for DSLR only..(no telescope)...just use a dovetail bar , dslr mount...take the nose bar and counterweights plum off...a naked mount..sort of.......the ieq45 will automaticly balance the load , that is schweet in my opinion , and lots of times I enjoy just doing camera wide field.

Please join in here ok , lets pick the bones of mounts one more time.

    A slight rant follows:

The new iOptron is just too new to comment on? Wait and see what happens.

My only RANT with the scope manufacturers is the features that are put into the hand controller. All of the mounts you listed are GOTO mounts-- the hand controller software between the manufacturers is where the main differences are-- so it comes down to personal preference.

You have "All Star Polar Alignment" a very neat feature--of Celestron

Then you have "Spiral Search" a very neat feature of Meade

Then you have different "SYNC" functions- between Meade and Celestron and different names like "PAE" ---- and they do not work the same.

and why is the EQ6 hand controller lacking many features until you attach EQMOD to it?

All GEMs should have allstar polar alignment, and all GEMS should have a spiral search

And all GEMS should be capable of SYNC that actually improves the gotos after you sync--

and Orion-Skywatcher need to fire their software engineers and hire the folks at EQMOD.

In my humble opinion these are the only key differences between Losmandy-- Celestron-- and Meade --- the hand controller software is the difference. What we need are 4 hackers to make the rounds and alter the firmware in all of these scopes so that they ALL have similar capabilities.

    Clear skies to you all.

I read the full post on CN about the IEQ45 as well and found it quite informative. Although I have Meade's LightSwitch 8", I've come to take Joe's comments to heart about being wary of new products. The fact that the Celestron has that All Star Polar Align routine, makes it a very STRONG "front runner" for me. I have no experience with an Equatorial Mount and having a routine to "help" me polar align, that's a huge benefit to me. I really like the weight (25lbs) of the IEQ45, it's 45 pound capacity and the built-in GPS. But, being a novice, I think I'd settle with the CGEM at $1499 add the GPS Skysync accessory ($199) and have the convenience of the polar align routine even though it's 16 pounds heavier.

    Joe,
You make good points about the hand control and software , for me that means little though...I use Skytools 3 on the windoz side and Equinox 6 on the mac side ,so the only time I would use a hc is to drill down into tracking rates if I were to drift align...now I do like the EQMOD , it lives on the notebook , and you can really drill into tracking there quite easily...something to note about tracking , the Ioptron you can actually slow down to .25 or .50 on the tracking rate.I will reference a buddy of mine that says , if you really want tracking performance you have to go under the hood and tweak adjustments.
I am told that Celestron has a new mount and hc coming , the new hc will work with all Celestron mounts , and thats because the latest load of Ascom software works with all mounts starting with the ASGT..and of course that introduced pulse guiding which has drastically improved tracking ,especially if PHD has decided to run good for the evening... and of course thats for another thread...
