Default Idiot needs advice. Need good mount for 9.25 Celestron with narrow dovetail mount.

    Hey guys,

My dad bought a 9.25 Celestron telescope about 8-9 years ago. He died back in 05 and I haven't really fooled with it since.

It had a crappy mount, and I don't even know where all the parts are now. Can I get a new mount? The scope looks like the 9.25 Celestron listed for the cg-5 mount, and I believe that dovetail is the same dimensions. Any reason to believe otherwise?

Does anyone make a nice "go-to" mount for this? Excuse my ignorance, but I an ignorant!

Heya Greg and welcome to the forum. Celestron makes a great goto mount for that telescope. Its called a CG 5. That particular mount is branded by several different companies, but will handle the 9.25 for visual use. If you are thinking about astrophotography down the road, you may want to consider a beefier mount like the Cgem or an atlas eqg eq6 ect.

Really sorry to hear about your dad. I know he would be happy to see you back at the eyepiece. Thanks for joining us here at AF and let us know if we can help you get that (very nice) scope back up and running

    Hi,
Welcome to the Astronomy Forum. The Celestron CG5GT mount is an excellent choice for the telescope. If you buy a used one, there are several variants out there ranging from 100% manual operation to computerized goto.

Hey guys. I want to make sure I am getting the right one (finally). The ones on ebay are talking about a "vixen mount" I have no idea. My old tube has a dovetail bar screwed onto the bottom. The Scope was purchased around 1998-2000

Your dad's scope, and now yours, very likely has a 'vixen' dovetail bar. However, just tell us how wide it is and then there will be no uncertainty. That c9.25 is a nice scope, it's a good thing to put it back in service. Besides, every time you use it you'll be remembering and honouring your dad.

    Hi Greg,

Unless your dad made some modifications there's no reason to believe your Celestron 9.25 didn't come with a Vixen dovetail. Either the CG-5 or the beefier CGEM would be a good mount, and both come ready for a Vixen dovetail. If you have any reason to doubt, measure the width of the dovetail and post them here. ADMaccessories.com sells a dual Vixen/Losmandy "DV" saddle that can accept either dovetail that can replace the stock saddle.

Let us know how it works out.
    ~~Aaron
