Default Need assistance please with first telescope telescope

First thank you for all the posts I have read already regarding selecting a new telescope. Fter reading some post I was intent on getting the Orion xt8i. Then after reading more posts, the Apertura AD8. Then looking around for a used one I found a used Celestron Nexstar 8se for $250. So tempting at that price but the whole motor and power thing makes me unsure. This would be my first telescope and one I would want to stay with for a few years. I would appreciate any guidance you could offer. I would want to see planets and dso. Thanks!

Depending on your budget I would go for the Apertura 8" (new) rather than the used C8, though that also would be a good scope. Well, I for the most part, like new scopes but I did pick up my 6" refractor used. Welcome to the Forums and good luck with your telescope decision.

Hello and welcome. That seems like a good price for the 8SE, provided everything works properly. There is definitely a difference in how the XT8i, AD8 and 8SE all work. The XT8i will guide you to the target (but works completely manual if the controller is turned off), the 8SE will find targets on its own after you align it, and the AD8 you get to do all the work. Have you looked through each of them at a star party, to make sure the view you will get is what you expect? If not, that is a good idea, as targets look different between an 8" SCT and an 8" reflector, plus setup and use for each can be different.

If this is your first telescope, then I would be wary of the 8se, especially at that price. If you are tempted, maybe an experienced member of your local astronomy society could go along with you to have a look at it and make sure it is in full working order. Make sure to join the society anyway, they will be able to advise you on all aspects of the telescope, how to set it up properly, what to look at in the sky etc.

Either of the dobs would be fine but the xt8i will find things for you. You only need to learn the names of a few bright stars to get started. If you buy a dob, make sure your first accessory is a red dot finder or Telrad. These will make it much easier to find your target stars when setting the push-to, and also finding objects if you don't want to use the push-to. You will need to learn to collimate the dob, but it is not difficult to do.

Wow thank you for such quick and helpful replies. I do like the idea of less automation and I'm guessing the dobsonian will give me less to mess with than the stand of the 8se. It is tempting to have a telescope that automates finding object but since simplicity and fewer things that can break or malfunction or make things confusing has me back to focusing on the xt8i and the AD8. Open to any other suggestions. Again thanks for jumping in and helping.

I still dont have much expericence, but i would say that a 8inch dobs would be a great first scope, but the 8se, or even better, a celestron c8 with asgt would be a great all-arounder.

You can add the intelliscope push to feature of the Xt8i to the AD8 with manual setting circles and an inclinometer for under $50.
A purely manual scope is much easier to maintain with no electronic things to go wrong.
While the Xt8i is not too bad, I do remember reading about one Xt8i owner who disassembled the base to solve the Orion AZ stiction problem and had difficulty putting it back together in a way the electronics still worked.
The AD8 is a very good value if you consider the accessories it comes with.

The 8se at $250 is a really good value if it all works. It is also better if portability is important to you. I must say it looks like a "too good to be true" deal so get an experienced 8SE owner to check it out for you.

Thanks again for your help. After more research and considering your input and advice I ordered an 8" Dobsonian. Due to price and wanting to limit investment until I know I will maintain an interest I purchased the EXPLORE FIRSTLIGHT 8" DOBSONIAN. Since it was only $333 with free shipping and no sales tax it seemed a good balance between good enough quality/features and finding an affordable way to find out if I have a real and sustainable interest in astronomy. Your help was fantastic, thanks again.
