Default Removing dust cover from Apertura Dobsonian Telescope

    Folks,

I have a strange issue here. I bought the Apertura 8" Dobsonian Telescope with Accessories - AD8"from HighPoint Scientific. Everything looks fine but they put the front dust cover very tightly. As the result I am not able to pull it out. Cover is pushed all the way inside. It does not have enough gap/space to use finger or other tools like flat screw drive to pull it out.

Any suggestion on pulling that cover out. Has anyone experience such issue?

I am hesitating to use much force to avoid mirror damage. Appreciate any suggestion. I am eager to check out my new telescope.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum!

    That kinda sucks!

If it were me, I'd remove those pan head screws just behind the grey ring on the front of the scope. These screws are what hold the ring on. Remove the ring and pop the dust cover out, then re-install the ring.

Whatever you do, don't remove the four knurled knobs. These are what hold the secondary mirror assembly (spider vanes).

I wonder too if setting the scope outside in the cold air for a bit would contract the metal and plastic, allowing the cover to pop out more easily?

Good suggestion from Bryan. I am guessing that the problem is temperature-related. I have found that plastic dust covers contract in the cold much more than the metal tube. They probably got complaints from people who had the covers fall out in cold weather and started making the covers fit a bit tighter.

Once you get the cover off, by either of Bryan's techniques, you might try attaching a knob to it for future removals.

I have the 10" Apertura Dob, and the dust cap does shrink considerably in cold weather.

Huh.. I thought I was the only one! I had to add tabs to my cover for the RC it was literally falling off.

I used the 'fluffy' side of Velcro strips

Plastic does contract in the cold. I think I'd put knobs just on the ends to get it off. Maybe three.
