    Default Synscan & Nexstar handsets

    Hi all,

Curious to know if the Skywatcher Synscan handset is interchangeable with the Celestron Nexstar? I just cannot see any difference physically, mechanical or tech wise between them. You can get replacement handsets for each, regardless of the scope the original came with, and both are owned by Synta.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Alex.

Unfortunately they may look the same but that's where the similarity ends. They are not interchangeable due to different programming protocols.

I have both and they look similar even the connection fit ,the celestron has more options for alignment.I have never tried in case it messes with the firmware, would be interesting if someone has.

I think it will come down to the firmware not being interchangeable.

    Thanks for the replies.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't I be able to plug in a Synscan handset into a Nexstar mount and use it? Different mounts come with different encoder resolutions, and say the Nexstar handset will work with all Nexstar mounts, same with Synscan and Skywatcher mounts. Just wanting to clear up my own doubts.

I know that you could purchase a skywatcher mount with auto tracking and they say to uprgrade to full goto simply purchase the synscan hand controller and away you go, If memory serves this can be done with the HEQXXX mounts.

Whether the software will be compatible across different manufacturers we do not know. Unless you can convince Richard to try!

It depends on whether the different brands use the same protocols for talking between the handset and the encoders/motors inside the mount. There isn't a common standard for that across all brands, and even if the same manufacturer makes both handsets, and uses the same protocols, the firmware may not recognise models from the other brand. After all, the brands want you to buy their handset, not give money to the other guys...

Some years back, the handset firmware wasn't universal even within the same brand - back when I upgraded the handset on my Celestron N11GPS, although the hardware was identical, the firmware for the N11GPS and the Nexstar 4 was different.

Though that's one example where cross-brand (sort of) use did work - I also had a tasco nexstar 4 clone (they licensed it from Celestron) and the Celestron nexstar 4 handset worked OK with it although it did need some motor settings changing since the tasco had some gearing/motor differences from the celestron version.

Ok for the good of this forum I tried a Skywatcher hand controller on a celestron SLT mount message 'both axis non conform, and that's it nothing works , no damage done but to answer Alex they are not compatible

Thank you for taking one for the team. Not all of us would be willing to take the risk of something going South during the experiment. Wasn't much of a surprise that they aren't interchangeable.

I have the cables to update the firmware and after checking that no hardware can get damaged was ok with it , by the way the same problem in reverse i.e. Celestron hand controller on a Skywatcher mount
