    Default TOA-150 vs. 14" LX200 shootout

So this week I went out with some friends to compare two scopes.

    A 6" Takahashi and a Meade 14"

Seeing was maybe a 6/10 not great.

We started on the Moon, looking at the Alpine Valley, the 6" refractor with a nice pair of binoviewers easily showed so much fine detail on the surface, it was like being on a spaceship looking out the window. We could even make the rille in the valley, absolutely stunning!

Then the Meade, could not get a clear image, it was bright, and had to put a filter on, then back and fourth between eyepieces and still just an awful image.

~note, the Meade had been out cooling down for at least two hours before we got there, and a basic star test seemed to be fairly collimated~

Then we went to the Orion Nebula, and it was bright, and ok, but could not make out E or F. Could of been bad seeing?

Then the Tak on the same thing, was beautiful, sharp stars and E was coming in and out, but otherwise just fantastic.

Saturn, the big one was bright, and could somewhat make out the Cassini division, but just could not get it very sharp.

The Tak resolved much more detail and could go much more power with clarity.

Then we split some doubles and here the 14" could do ok, on the dim ones, but the Tak was still showing pin points.

Further reason I'd never want one of them over priced mass produced tin cans.

But that is a limiting factor - 6 inches will never replace 14" That's 28sq inches to 153 sq inches.
that goes from about ~ mag 12 to mag 16 - if the upper atmosphere is turbulent, of course a small lens will work well - a 6" meade maksutov would be better than the 14" simply because of the twisted air - whic would be like looking through a warped window.
If you get a situation like heavy LP, a 6" is not going to get through it as a 14"will
And once the air is settled, M42 will show up in colour with a 14" - I can resolve E,F and even G with my 8" on a good night.
    Your test is flawed!!

It may have been, but as bright as the moon was, it just as bad as cheap pair of binoculars.

Well this is Afocal with a point and shoot in Tropical summer, with my 8" - I guess your 14" has a problem if it can't beat that.

You were probably standing between the scopes during the side-by-side test. My guess is that you were accidentally putting your patched eye to the EP on the 14" SCT.

A Tak has the notable contrasty sharpness one only finds in a Tak! Just like your 20" Obsession which has some superior optics, do enjoy using my buddies goto 20" Obsession for some star hopping and visual work. My mass produced Meade is just as fun to use, but best yet many customizations were done throughout the years to improve mechanicals of the scope, part of fun of LX. A Tak is in the future, one day.........along with AP grade mount, once I am ready to commit expense of nicely equipped car, in meantime more than happy with views I do get.

I wish that was the case, I hope to go back again when it warms up, and a better night. I'm getting my second folded optical scope soon, but not one of these mass produced ones...

"Fairly collimated" and "collimated" are two entirely different things entirely. Unless you properly collimated the SCT, your comparison is meaningless.
