Default Meade LX90 ACF 8” help

I was deciding between a 12 in goto collapsible dob or the Meade LX90 acf 8”.

I have decided to go with the Meade as my backyard is obscured by trees and I will mostly drive down to a nearby park for observing sessions. Thus the portability of the 8” is a big factor.

I am buying the Meade LX90 acf 8” for $1350 including a few eyepieces and random gear.

I have a few questions that I’d like some help answering if possible.

    1. Is that a good price for what I’m getting?

    2. When was that model originally released? How old is it?

    3. The main ep it comes with is a Meade series 5000 18mm. What is this good for and what other eps/ equipment should I look at getting?

    4. What things should I look for/how did I look for them when picking up the scope to ensure I’m not getting a lemon?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi and welcome! I assume the price is in $A? In which case I think it is a good price for the scope.

I think the first LX90 ACF was released in 2009. See a review from Astronomy Magazine here: http://www.astronomy.com/~/media/imp...h_lx90-acf.pdf

The original version had the nice shiny blue coating. I am not sure when Meade changed this to the horrible rough blue coating (my bias is showing here: I feel like someone ran their fingernails down a blackboard whenever I touch that coating!), but if yours has it then it is less than 10 years old. In Meade's defence, I think they changed the coating to show less finger-prints...

The Series 5000 18mm eyepiece is a good quality 6 element, 60-degree AFOV With the 8" LX90 this gives you around 111x, and a true FOV of around 32 arc-minutes (slightly more than the full moon). This is a good, general purpose eyepiece and a nicely useable FOV and magnification for many DSO's, including galaxies and nebulae. You might want to look for something that gives you around 200x (ie: 10mm FL) for nights of good seeing and planetary viewing, and around 40-70x for wide-field viewing of larger DSO's (ie: around 28mm-50mm FL eyepieces).

The scope should be clean, with no scratches on the front glass plate. It should boot up, locate and track objects without fuss. It will sound pretty noisy as it move between objects (it's a Meade!). If it has GPS you might find there is a software glitch, and you will either need an update from Meade or enter your coordinates and time manually. This is due to a change in the GPS software/signal generally, nothing to do with Meade.

When it has had time to match the outside temperature, you should have nice sharp images at 111x.

That's all I can think of at the moment. There are lots of threads discussing specific eyepieces you might want to look at. My best advice is to join your local Astronomy Society: they will help you enormously!

All the best, and good luck,

    Dean

I have a LX90ACF that is just a few years old and a big truss design Dobson and when it comes to easy viewing the LX90 with Az/Alt mount is a pleasure to use if its working 100%. To get it to work 100% takes a bit of experience because has to be setup right. The Dobson has wonderful views if you can guide it to the right objects but it takes planning and patience it get to the right location and set it up, remember you have to check its columation every time you use it. I would first want to see how well the Meade LX90 does goto and how well it tracks. Find out how old it is and if it comes with a Autostar or Audiostar controller. I have two LX90's : one had a factory fault and was replaced, the replacement is very accurate and tracks well.

PS : A few LX90ACF scopes with GPS bought around 2007, had developed problems with their time and date but there are patched firmware available for the Audiostar/Autostar controllers but these are available free from StarGPS....Meade have so far have done nothing to solve the problem for the Autostar/Audiostar controllers.

Thanks so much for the info! It does have the rough blue coating so I guess i'm glad that means it is a newer model.

Great! Thanks for the help! It does come with the Audio star controller and it has the rough blue coating.

Hi again. I did a bit of checking around and the first mention that I can see of the Meade rough blue coating is in early 2012...

    Hi guys

I picked up the scope today and have brought it home to test it out.

I have got it all set up and can move the scope horizontally with the arrow buttons on the audio star and it moves horizontally automatically when slewing during alignment. However i cant get it to move vertically at all electronically. It moves vertically smoothly when i move it manually but i just can't get it to move vertically when slewing or using the arrows on the control. I was just wondering if you had any ideas on how i can get past this?

Thanks again for all your help!
