Default A Tasco 11TR fell into my lap..

    Friday, July 13, 2018

I answered an add for a "reflector" telescope on Friday of last week. The asking price was $25, and I bought it for $20 with an old EQ2 mount. Its made in Japan, diamond "Z" marked, so likely a Tanzutsu. Circle Z appeared on some Selsi and Jason scopes as well, according to my short research.

    IMG_6002.jpg

This poor little scope has suffered a death of one thousand cuts. The primary and secondary appear to be in good shape. And, the EQ mount itself seems to be fine - smooth action of rotation in both axes with no binding.

I want to restore this little scope, it just seems like the right thing to do.

    Issues:
    - The tube is dented at the finder. Multiple dents, as if someone was using it for baseball practice.
    - The eyepiece tray for the tripod is missing. Its tied together with shoelace.
    - The M6 threaded bolt/pin in the counterweight is broken.
    - The M6 screw at the base of the mount is stripped.
    - The finder looks like its been through a cement truck.

    IMG_6007.jpg

    - The primary had cardboard spacers installed.
    - The focuser is a .965".

So far, I have cleaned the primary with dawn and double distilled water, as per the usual method.

    IMG_6017.jpg

I removed the cardboard backing and replaced with teflon glides.

    IMG_6011.jpg

    IMG_6019.jpg

    IMG_6015.jpg

Finally, I managed to get the broken pin out of the counterweight by carefully pushing it through with an M6 bolt.

    IMG_6024.jpg

Lots of work to do, but its coming along nicely. My next task is to straighten the tube, probably using a cheapo exhaust expander tool.

Then I need to find an eyepiece tray, or fabricate one from wood or metal.

    Kind regards,

    Ian

Haha.. I especially like the cardboard spacer!

Good luck sounds like a fun project and the important parts seem to be in order.

Thanks, I enjoy fixing up these old (but good quality) scopes. I'm pretty sure this scope had never been collimated, unless it was inadvertent, following a heavy blow to some unsuspecting victim.

    Looking forward to this project.

Here is a pic of the Tasco 11TR's focuser. Its a .965" as mentioned. I would like to convert to a 1.25" somehow. I have a 2" stock Orion focuser with a 1.25" adapter, just sitting on my shelf... this is likely overkill, but it might be fun to retrofit. Hmmmmmm.....

Fun project! I believe Tanzutsu was the last of the last Japanese production Tasco scopes. Should be quite decent. Enjoy.

Hey Ian, nice deal for $20!! I have the 11TE-5 which has the same specs, and is one of my most used scopes. Yours is definitely worth restoring for sure. You've already done a great job on the primary mirror mount!

I'm imagining it looks similar to this, with yours having a red tube...:

Interested to see how it progresses!!

    Thanks Mark,

I knew you would like this one. Its the same scope, just not made by Towa. I am debating as to whether to cobble up a dob mount or just run with the EQ2.

    I
Well, I tried it on the EQ2 for a bit, and like most of these scopes, too much scope for the mount.

I took the scope in the pic I posted above, and the mount was plenty sturdy for my 70's Sears 60mm f/11...
    60mm_F11.jpg

And the scope itself is so much more sturdy and usable as a dob, really. Some pine shelving, drain end caps for bearings, a record and furniture sliders, and bicycle brakes/pads for the feet. $20, maybe, plus your time.

C'mon, you know what you want to do.... telescope project......

    All the best,
