    Beautiful Ian, just beautiful!

Looks good on that EQ mount (I'm partial to EQs). But a 4.5" F/7.9 on a rocker box Dob would be easier to use and transport.

Ian, the closest I ever got to getting a rocker box Dob was the Orion XT4.5 - small enough to take on the bus or train to get out of the city (I don't own my own vehicle, nor do I drive - despite the car you see parked on my front driveway). A 6-inch F/8 rocker box Dob would be impossible to carry on public transport...

I never got the XT4.5 because the Christmas sale stocks at Orion ran out - I ended up getting the ST80A instead for the same price ($199). Eventually I wound up with two 4.5" F/7.9 Newts on EQ mounts...

    Dob Mount ideas

Thinking about semi-circular altitude bearings and a rocker box. Glide material for the azimuth bearings will be a combination of Formica 909-42 and furniture glides or possibly teflon.

Box dimensions will be stolen from ideas posted by the FatKitty earlier in this discussion.

My advice is to make the rocker box tall enough so that you dont need a table to view , that was my error I made it as short as possible so that it just clears the turntable , thinking then that the lighter the better. I see that the image uploader is still not working

Absolutely. My drawing above is schematic and focusses on the alt bearing layout, this mount is meant to be used in the field as a stand alone.

Here is the approximate height (Montreal Mark's creation, same scope):

And Mark's cuts for 3/4" plywood 3-sided rocker box, designed to rest on the ground. My design will be slightly different to use semicircular bearings (no V-cut at the top of the box), but I'm not sure that the differences are more than trivial.

So... the total height will be > 20" which is similar to that of my stock Orion rocker box for the XT10 newt.

    Altitude Bearings and Bearing Supports

I have designed somewhat oversized bearings and bearing supports for this scope, copying ideas that I found on the stellafane site.

I would like to use traditional ATM dob style semi circular bearings and bearing supports just to try it out. Teflon and 909-42 Formica will be the interacting bearing surfaces (just as for the azimuth), so it should give decent "stiction".

    Here's my idea:

I don't have the tools to make precise circular cuts and so I will get some help for those.

Thanks for reading to the bottom,

From the sides of the rocker box I used a hole saw to cut out 2 holes 100mm diameter (smaller than yours) once I had my 2 circular cut out bearings I then cut the the sides of the rocker in the center of the cut out to form half circles, so that the circular cut outs fit in the housing , I found a plastic jar same diameter and cut 2 rings that I pressed onto the bearings . The altitude works very well much better than the base turntable which unfortunately sometimes 'sticks"

    Thanks Richard!

I am also worried about the azimuth bearing, and so you have me thinking to redesign that. What I will do is build a lazy Susan style bearing into the design.

This is similar to GSO, Skywatcher and Meade big dobs -> its better than Orions XT series.

I bought a round bearing at Lee Valley yesterday, made in the USA, 9 dollars!!

Should work well with some added friction provided by strips of carpet.
