    Test fitting the Meade focuser!

This is really getting to be kind of fun, because the parts are starting to look like a real scope.

Tonight I test fitted the Meade focuser, with the ultimate goal of trying out collimation and actually focusing on something with an 11 mm ES 82.

I had to relieve the inside rail of of the focuser to fit over one of the screws that holds the secondary to the tube. Lots of aluminum flying.

    Behold, Meadenstein!

    Collimation

This went OK, and I had to loosen off the main screw behind the secondary housing to get the angle in the ballpark of the primary, using a cheap laser collimation tool.

Once I had the secondary shooting the beam to the centre of the primary (using the freshly installed marker), I adjusted the primary to centre on the 45* face of the collimation tool. A poor man's Glatter, but it gets me in the ballpark.

Hard to tell, but it collimated with some very gentle persuasion.

    Now the BIG TEST....

Does this sucker come to focus?

    <<drum roll please>>

Yes, it does!! . I set it up and pointed it out to peer down the street. From 200 metres, I could read the lettering of specs on a street light post.
Seems to be in the right spot for focus, as I wanted most of the draw tube out of the light path of the business end, to minimize obstruction. And I still had about 25 mm of back focus.

Its snowing now, so I couldn't run any star tests, but the views look pretty good for such a small scope. I don't think it had ever been collimated having left the factory!

    EP: ES82 11 mm

I think it will be fine with all of my EPs out to 28 mm. I will test it more when I can find some time. I'm kind of happy with this experiment.

I'll tear it down again and finish painting the OTA.

    More to come...

Interesting I have one of these scopes that I built a Dobs mount for, works well unfortunately I dont have a spare 1.25 focuser so just use the old .965 one , but will be interesting if it works better with the new one

    Hi Richard,

    Thank you for your comment.

Good plan for the 11TE! Do you have any build photos or an isolated image of the final product of your dobs mount? Did you use semi-circle style bearings? I'm very interested in this plan. Mark (TheFatKitty) did the very same thing.

As for the Meade focuser, its a step up from the original, and is an aluminum body and stainless R/P construction. Its smoother than the stocker, should be able to support a DSLR, and accepts a 1.25" EPs without any adaptors. I have some nice old 23 mm and 30 mm EPs as well (Nikon, Olympus and Zeiss, etc) that will require an adaptor.

As this reflector is relatively slow (F 7.9), I think a wide variety of EP's will work, and it might be good for planetary views.

    Kind regards,
    Ian

    "Will it Focus?" Update

Yesterday evening, I ran through the gambit of my EP's and could bring everything into focus from my 4.7 mm ES82 on up to my Meade Super Plossl 40 mm.

    Teardown for final painting.

I will index the cell to save me from adjusting the primary again and dissemble the whole scope for final painting.

Now, I am dreaming up ideas for a dobsonian mount.

This evening I tore the scope down, which involved removing the cell, focuser, front plate, and secondary with mount.

The main tube got the deluxe treatment with 400 grit wet/dry 3M paper, and then shot with a final coat.

This was a good time to rinse and gently clean the primary and secondary (Dawn and double distilled water), which got dusty and grubby from all the shop work.

I also took the focuser apart and removed all the excess heavy grease from the draw tube, and took all the crud out of the gears. There might be 30-40 years of accumulated gunge in those gears.

The focuser will get some with black satin paint touch up, and tomorrow I'll shoot the inside of the OTA with flat black.

DIY dob mounts? I have been ogling the stuff at Dobstuff and Astrogoods - both make really beautiful kits.

Here are the optics and the focuser, ready to be installed.

    Cute little secondary, amirite?
