Default Help with my Maksutov Cassegrain

    Hi!

My first telescope is a Maksutov Cassegrain that I got a couple of months ago. It has been working perfectly until this morning. It was fine when I started, but suddenly, when I pointed at a bright object, instead of seeing said object i saw a disc with a hole in (like a CD or something) and I have no idea what it could be. I took the telescope apart to see if it was just dirt, but I couldn't find anything. Can anyone give me some advice?

    Best regards,
    Lisa

It is severely out of focus. The black center is the secondary spot.

If it happened suddenly, it sounds like something happened to the focusing mechanism.

Look into the front of the scope and turn the focus knob counter clockwise (left). You should see the primary mirror move towards you (up). It should move away from you when turned right. If you don't see the mirror moving, the focus mechanism is broken.

Hi Lisa and welcome to the forum!

What you describe sounds exactly like a defocused star. Did you adjust the focus on the scope at all? If so, did the view change?

EDIT: Well, Scott beat me to the punch.
