Default Is there a best time of year to buy an XXG?

So I am happy to say that I was able to convince my wife to let me buy the big Dob I want for my birthday this year; it's my 40th birthday present, but 1 year early. I am going to buy a XX12G or a XX14G from Orion, because I want a big dob for viewing. I already have a big refractor, an ES AR152 for AP and viewing. Granted, I know I should get a higher quality, but smaller refractor for AP. One is in my longer term future. But for now, visual is my primary "focus". I'll get a 80 or 102 refractor in a few years; I might even consider trading my AR152 for one at some point. Anyway, like I said, visual is my primary thing.

So, is there any time of year that the Orion XX12-16g go on sale? I have watched for a year or two now, and not noticed one. I see the accessories go on sale periodically, and that's cool. It seems like they go on sale a few times a year, and others have posted what accessories one should get. I think I have a good idea what to buy there based on those posts, and my own experience with others dobsonians that they have at my astronomy club meetings.

In case you are wondering, my plan to decide on the 12 or the 14 will be decided at NEAF this year, which is near where I live.

As a side note, I am also considering a 11" SCT, but I think I would like a bit larger aperture at a bit lower price. since I would roll this dob out from my basement to my front yard for viewing, I think it would be easier to do that, and the associated tuning if necessary rather than the teardown/setup of the refractor/SCT each time I go out. Unfortunately, the topography of my property is such that a permanent setup is not possible. I don't want to put up an observatory in the middle of my yard.

Hi Mike. I am sorry to say that I have never seen it on sale, however that's not to say that it hasn't been. Maybe I just didn't notice it. I didn't see it on sale at Christmas either. Ed

If there is, I don't know when. I am also looking to buy the XX14g. Maybe we can get Orion to cut us a deal if we buy two. I've been hoping to find one used. Someone sold one used a month ago but I wasn't looking then. Please let me know if you hear of a sale. Good luck.

I would seriously ask Orion for a discount.... Extra Acc., etc.... whatever.... The worst thing they could say, is no.
I'm sure they don't sell too many of those a day... week, you get the idea...

I was thinking that too . . . that they don't sell much. Are you a member of the Astronomy League? I wonder if we tell them we are AL members and are planning to use the scopes at outreach programs, might they be willing to knock off 15%.

What's the Astronomy League? I've never heard of that. I am a member of two clubs in my area, both of which do outreach, although to be fair I only bring my scope to one place for the outreach; the main dark sky location where my club meets. Still, there are many local school, and college, students who have looked through my scope. As JimminCT said, worse they can say is no.

In truth, I was hoping someone would say yeah, the Memorial Day sales or the Easter sales, so I could buy one at or right after NEAF, as opposed to the fall for my bday.
