Default First Telescope - Celestron Advanced VX 8" EdgeHD

    Hi,

I have been looking at getting a telescope for a while now. I have given thought to what I want to actually achieve with it and decided I mainly want to see the rings of Saturn, and some detail on Jupiter.

Finally, I have Nikon D5100 DSLR so I would like to try my hand at Astrophotography. This wouldn't be the main purpose of the scope to begin with, but I can definitely see myself sinking a lot of time in to it!

With this in mind I have looked at various different telescopes and seem to have settled on the Celestron Advanced VX 8" EdgeHD. I was hoping you could offer your thoughts on if this is a good scope for me and if not, why? Is there anything else I need to think about getting at the same time? I'm thinking Dew Shield, Barlow, T-Adapter, T-Ring and a Focal Reducer.

This isn't the cheapest scope out there, so I don't want to get into Autoguiding just yet. What can I achieve with the EdgeHD without Autoguiding? and can the mount handle the extra load if I look into adding it at a later date?

Your feedback and advice is very much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Michael

    Hi Michael,
I'm sorry you didn't have any reply to this thread. I might be interresting with the same scope, but for me, it will probably be for next year.
You might look at this thread, many people are referring to the Celestron 8 HD as a very good buy: Refractor or Catadioptric?
    Good luck,

    Denis

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the response. The thread you have linked to was helpful, thank you.

I think the main thing holding me back at the moment is I don't have much idea what I can do without autoguiding. There's plenty of info out there, i'm trawling through it all.

I will be sure to let you know how the scope is if/when I pull the trigger and get one!

    Michael

    Your welcome Michael.
As for AP, I can't help you because I'm only doing visual for now.
    Good luck with decision process.

    Michael:

I purchased this exact telescope almost two years ago now and have been very happy with it. It too, was my first telescope but I had almost two years of learning the night sky with binoculars, books and a planesphere before buying the scope and mount. I had thought of the Starsense addition or a guidescope but with my T3 Canon, right now, about the only way I'll do any guiding would be from an OAG through my soon to be acquired laptop. I'm thinking of an OAG (off axis guider) mainly because of weight savings. I have yet to have the funds for it, but it's down the road for me.

I really like this scope and although I've had some trials with alignment, for me it's just the learning experience as is imaging. I've gotten some okay ones, some good ones (I think so at least) and a lot of "eh...what was I thinking or doing here?" type of images.

What I do like about this mount and telescope is that it IS PORTABLE....I can fit everything in one carry trunk and two bags. This all fits into my small sedan car along with my EP case, battery, stool for the battery, observing chair, a couple of clothes bags (if I'm going a long distance for a few days) and still have room on the back seat for other stuff.

To carry it from my apartment to my backyard observing site, again, this telescope is light enough to pick it up and carry it fully assembled out to or back from the site where I set everything up.

So, if you're looking still at this scope...well, there are BIGGER SCT's but this one to me is the sweet spot. Not too big, not too small and just the right weight to be able to carry it or pack it up for a trip.
