Default Where to place Barlow Lens and Magnification

    Hi everyone.

I am going out tonight with my telescope to hopefully view some planets. I have been reading about the Barlow lens, which I have, and I wanted to try it out tonight (that's right, in the two years I have had my telescope, I've never used the Barlow Lens).

The thing is, I am baffled as to where to place it. I know that it is supposed to be place before the eyepiece, so I have to put the eyepiece onto the Barlow lens. The thing I am having trouble with is where to put it after that. Am I supposed to remove the 90° hybrid diagonal and place the Barlow lens where that was or do I just place the Barlow lens onto the hybrid diagonal where I would usually put the eyepiece?

And my other question has to do with magnification. With a 25mm eyepiece, I have figured out my telescope to have a 28x magnification. Now, if I were to use a 3x Barlow lens, would I just multiply 28 by 3 to get 84x magnification, or is that wrong?

    Thanks for anyone who answers.

    Hi there,
I place my barlow into my diagonal nice and tight, then I add my eyepieces into the barlow after.

maybe someone can post a pic

Orion has a PDF file on every barlow made by them, here's the link:

It explains where to put the barlow.

here's a simpler version so you don't have to read everything:

So if placed before the diagonal it gives about a 50% increase in the magnification boost.

Got it. I'm not sure if I will put it before the diagonal. I figured my telescope to have a magnification limit of about 120x, so with the 50% increase, I'll get about 126x. I know, it's not much of a difference, but still. And I'm not even sure if my telescope will allow me to put the Barlow before the diagonal. :P
