    Default Eye Piece Magnification Question

I have a question which I hope someone can help me understand/make sure I understand correctly.

I looked up the specs of my Meade 8" Lightbridge and it says it has a focal length of 1219mm. There is another spec that says Maximum Practical Visual Power = 500x. So if I got this correct, the highest magnification I should have would be 500x?

The reason I ask is cause I am looking at purchasing 6.7mm Meade Series 5000 UWA and the guy selling also had a 4.7mm UWA. Would the 4.7mm be too powerful?

    Thanks in advance

    With your 8" F6 Lightbridge telesceope, a 6.7mm eyepiece yields a power of 182x. A 4.7mm eyepiece yields 259x

Both are compatible with your telescope limit of 500x

    How to calculate magnification:

Magnification = telescope focal length / eyepiece focal length.
e.g. If I was to use a 9.7mm eyepiece with my scope, I would be working at a magnification of 2000/9.7 = 206
