    Default American made EP's

Do any of you guys know of any american made ep's or are they all made in asia. In these times it would just be nice to buy american made. And if not what are your preferred brands for EP's and barlows?
    Meade DS-2114S autostar/GOTO 6.4mm plossl, 9mm, 25mm, 2X barlow

TeleVue. But they are not cheap. I think Parkes are still USA made as well but I am not certain, again not cheap.

My preferred brand is Vixen, (Japan), again not cheap.

Pentax (Japan) make great EPs, also expensive

Another high quality brand is Baader (German parent company but I suspect a lot of their EPs are now Asian manufacture)

Realistically though many of the offerings from Taiwan and China are of a very high standard these days.

William Optics (Taiwan) are top class

Brands like Orion, Celestron, and Meade all have quality EPs. which are sourced from various different Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers

GSO is becoming more popular because of price, although I have been disappointed by the EPs under their own brand that I have tested, but surprisingly I find their barlows to be of a top standard

Realistically though EP selection is going to come down to specifically what scope(s) you have and what objects you want to observe.

And of course, ultimately your budget!

    Savage,

While folks always desire to be loyal to their homeland(s), Astronomers are an International bunch, and tend to buy the best equipment they can regardless of country of origin.

Some of the best glass out there has come from Japan and China for many years, as well as Germany and several other countries. I would love to have a set of TeleVue myself due to the quality, but there is excellent quality from many Asian sources as well.

We are so apolitical here at AFN that we even specified in the site rules that political discussions are not allowed, for as a community we find that with respect to the science and universal aspect of astronomy is best served by separating it from our political loyalties.

Hi savage . The televue eyepieces are awesome from what i have read , but any eyepiece that is fully multi coated , good eyerelief , good exit pupel and has a wide field of view is ok in my book . I was like you when i got into astronomy and would only buy meade stuff because i was under the impression that they were made in the good ol usa . And i have a LOT of meade stuff , but besides there real high end stuff like the lx line of scopes , schmidt cassigrain in general were made in irvine , calf. But meade went through a little financial trouble and moved there mfg. plant to mexico . They still make top quality stuff . Real good eyepieces (made in china ) They are very affordable , fully multicoated , good eyerelief , good exit pupil ...When you buy an eyepiece , telescope or telescope accessorie , it should not matter where it is made as long as the item is of good or great quality . When you look for an eyepiece , look for multiple elements , fully multicoated (not multicoated or just coated) possibly ED glass wide field of view , good eyerelief and exit pupil .... just my two cents .

In no way was I getting political its just in my field of construction its always been known that China made parts arent of the same strict quality that american made items do. I'm just looking to get the best EP for clarity.

One thing to notice in an eyepiece is off-axis performance (how sharp stars are near the edge of the field of view). It is difficult to have a wide apparent field of view, long eye relief, and a flat field without paying some bucks. TeleVues are good. I don't have one, though, due to the lack of bucks. Although I'd rather buy American, it's gonna come down to what I can afford that has the best performance.

I do have some old Criterion eyepieces. I don't know where they were made, but it was an American company. All my others are Asian. It takes time to study eyepieces to know what to get for specific applications. It is even more difficult to find the ones that work in scopes with short focal ratios, like my f5--without paying the price. Not that they don't exist, but just that a short focal ratio is harder to please than a long one. As an example, I don't fully agree with using a cheap wide-field eyepiece with my scope. I may get one just for rough work, like an Expanse, but I'd be better off with a Stratus.

    Much to consider.
