Default Need help for an Orion EPIC ED-2 eyepiece

    Hi everybody,

I got a used and very dirty Orion EPIC ED-2 5.1mm eyepiece and dismounted it to clean

I have made a mistake and lost the design.

Can somebody tell me how to remount it (order and side for each lens).

    Thank you.

    Hi superstranger

Good to see you aren't a stranger now, and welcome to the forum!

I've been through this exercise more than once for others. It would help if you could post a photo of all the bits.

Since you can't do this directly (yet, due to the spam filter) you can upload to the Astronomy Photos area of this forum, let me know when you have, and I can approved that and cross link it to here.

Meanwhile I'll check out what I can.

Hmm its a 6 element ED.

Might be tricky but if we can see the bits I have a few different 6 element EPs here although not Orion Epics

Although there are six elements these are more likely in two or three cemented cells with spacer rings?

Very easy to dissasemble; the trick is to take everytime the whole piece vertically

    1) unscrew the metal part going in the telescope
    2) take with caution the black metal piece vertically to avoid the falling of the lenses
    3) You can take apart the top lens (near to the eye)
    4) inside the black tube, you have 2 lenses staying in place by 2 other black tubes moving into the first one
    5) if you want, you can dissasemble the 4th lens by unscrewing the backside of the black tube

    That's all folks.

My problem is with the place and direction of the 2 central lenses.

I am trying to put a drawing of the different pieces on that topic

    Thanks again

    Over to you, Rich?

I am willing to make an educated guess but better if someone actually has one of these

Lets see what comes up in the next 24hrs?

Where I am unsure is which way up the lens in that I have labelled photo No 5 goes and which spacer is which

Rich if you do pull one apart for goodness sake make sure that you know which way up and which way down each lens goes. The won't be symmetrical

    Hi Superstranger,

    Welcome to Astronomy Forum.
Good luck with your eyepiece re-assembly.
Many years ago, while working on my car, I learned that it is a good idea to document the disassembly of unfamiliar items.

    Hi Star Drop,

I know that, and I did it before I was disturbed.

When I had the chance to begin again, half a day later, pfuit, paper was gone somewhere (trash I presume) and my poor old mind could not remind the sequences.

That story sounds familiar as my wife hates to see notes lying around.
