Question In-Focus and 2" to 1.25" Negative Profile EP Holder

... awhile back I was experimenting with different combinations with EPs in different setups on my scopes ... sometimes I ran into a problem with not enough in-focus ... then I ran across this little item ...

    ScopeStuff

... anyone have any experience with this? ... or have one? ... think it will work? ...

... I'll probably get one anyway ... lol ... unless anyone comes up with a reason why it wouldn't work ... I have already upgraded most of my scopes to 2" format and use an adapter for 1.25" EPs ...

Hi bill , Are you sure the problem is not enough out travel ? With your focuser all the way out can you get focus by lifting the eyepiece slowly out of the focuser ? Just curious ...

lol ... actually ... I just figured out how the adapter works ... and it would be a nightmare for me to use (remember, I'm the guy who like to play around swapping out EPs left and right) ... this holder holds each ep with two set-screws and then slides down into the 2" focuser ... I would have to buy a half-dozen or more of these and then set each EP at the correct depth just to be able to use one or two EPs with my other set ... in essence using this holder as one big parfocal ring ... NAAAAA ... not gonna happen ... for that price I can buy the rest of the set to replace the oddballs and just get over the fact that I have to focus when using some specialty EPs ... I can live with that ...

... so I was thinking this adapter would do the trick ... BUT (and I am usually the butt) I sometimes overlook the obvious ... hence ... yous guys and gals ...

    ... thanks for listening ... lol ...

Hey bill , heres an idea , see if they will give you a discount , and buy 1 for each eyepiece LOL . Just kidding dude . What eyepiece brand did you go with ? Meade . On the etx70 ota you just got , does it have two ears where the mount used to attach ?Or is it smooth sided ?

... I'm keeping the ETX-70 "original" ... though I am getting a 45* correct image piece (Meade #933) to stick the webcam on and use as a guider ... the flip mirror system built into the back is just awesome ... all that is left of where it used to mount are the holes for the "long screws" ... I got it as an OTA only ...

I have since mounted it with 3.5" rings setup for adjusting (as with a finder) ... the front ring fits like a glove on the front of the ETX-70 and the rear ring is adjustable by use of the three nylon thumbscrews ... interestingly enough, it has the same focal length (350mm) as the 70mm Meade 70AT-TR, but in a much smalled package making for a great guider/finder ... I'm going to try an extra-wide medium EP in it, and with the flip mirror it is an instant guider/finder combo that is hard to beat ... and it makes a killer grab and go package on a CG-2 (which I stole from under my Celestron AM 114EQ ... along with the dovetail bar) ...

... as for EPs ... I have a complete set of the Zhumell Super Plossls (1.25" format) ... and I am fleshing out a set of Meade 4000 SPs (only missing the 15mm now) ... and then I have a handful of other EPs from Celestron, Orion, Meade, and some Rini EPs on the way as well ...

.... and I just started on getting my 2" gear sorted out ... already picked up an ED Barlow and dielectric 90-angle ... I'll start picking off the EPs next ...

... I hit the in-focus "snag" on the Meade "shorty" ... the AT-TR ... and (oddly enough) I am thinking it will also show up with the ETX ...

... I originally thought of chopping the end off of one of my 90mm and using the extra-long focuser on it to make it a "shrinking" 90mm Grab-and-Go ... seriously man ... you should see this "long focuser" ... it's insane really ... but the focus-tube slides all the way up through the last internal baffle (just barely) and that's what gave me the idea for the "Shrinking" 90mm ...

man bill , i thought i had it bad ?. I love the crispness of the etx optics . You have to get a flex focuser for the 70 also . All it is is a flex rig that attaches to the original focuser attachment point and has a flex cable with a knurled knob at the other end . There is a lot of good info on weasners etx site you might be intrested in also .

Weasner's site is a goldmine for Meade owners ...

... I was looking at those flex focusers ... and I am thinking I can make one from plastic coated steel cable and a splice block for electrical wiring ... and then re-attach the focus knob ... but they have got to be one of the most affordable scope parts ever ... might just be worth the money ...

Underneath the focus knob is a small shaft that a aluminum sleeve slips over . It has 2 set screws , 1 for the focuser and 1 for the flex shaft . . on the other end there is a knurled knob about the size of a dime and about 4 times as thick . The only trouble i could see with using coated cabel is the stuff flex-focusers are made of is a twisted and not a braeded type . If your dead set on making one , get a copy of a mcmaster-carr catalog...
