Default Baader Hyperion 13mm vs 17mm

    Hello all,

I currently have the 13mm Hyperion coupled with 14mm and 28mm focus rings. I have the opportunity to keep this 13mm or swap it with a 17mm and I'm no sure if I should keep or swap at this time.

In having both rings really the ranges of both EPs overlap by a lot

    17 mm 13.1 10.8 9.2
    13 mm 10.8 9.2 8.1

My scope is a Meade LS-8 so I guess I'm wondering do I need to bring the EP down to an 8 or is a 9.2 good enough?

Hello and welcome to the forums
Why not have both and just use the 17mm as a 17mm?

I've got a 29mm and now this 17mm. I figured that I'd use the range of the 17mm a bit more than the 13mm so I ended up trading it in today and picked up the two focus rings for it. I agree with you though that it would be better to simply swap out the EPs themselves and not have to fiddle with the focus rings -- but I'm trying to take it easy on the pocketbook at the moment

I didn't realize that everyone switched over to the skysearchers... I'll create an account over there shortly too. Appreciate the invite!

I have used the Hyperions before and never bothered with the tuning rings, a bit of a nuisance in the dark.
Check out GSO Plossl eyepieces, they are quite good quality and are a steal at their selling price.
They will also work very well in a f/10 telescope.

8 mm will give you 250 X magnification. You will need it for comfortable separating double stars. But as already been said it is quite a nuisance hassling those rings in the dark. I have had those rings in my Hyperion too. And yes, I have dropped them more than once, when they did not fit at once.
Like Abby already mentioned having a nice pair of fixed eyepieces is much more comfortable.

totally agree with others comments I tried these with the rings and found them far to fiddly in the dark and now all of my e/p are hyperions and used only as their true power.
Either way these are great e/p.
