    Default Orion 7.5mm Lanthanum Eyepiece

I found an Orion 7.5mm Lanthanum Eyepiece on eBay. On instinct, I purchased it, though the price was higher than I am normally willing to pay. It is my understanding they eyepiece has never been used and has simply been sitting in its box in some store. I wanted an eyepiece between my Vixen LV 6mm and 9mm eyepieces and this one looks like it will fill that slot precisely. The body form looks like a Vixen LV, just a different paint job. Sometimes I go by old saying, "If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck." Since this eyepiece is shaped like a Vixen LV, has what looks like the same eye shield, and has a lanthanum lens, it seems to fit that scenario.

I cannot find any specs on it, and the label, "Orion Lanthanum Eyepiece," is not listed in Mr. Paolini's book, so I am a bit at a loss. I have seen "Wanted" advertising for this particular eyepiece, so I am assuming it is a good one. I am hoping it is a relabeled version of the Vixen LV 7mm eyepiece, with a slight change in focal length for the better, that I have been looking for and cannot find.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

At one point Vixen made a few models for Orion. If it says made in Japan, it is likely Vixen made.

Looking at the pictures, the box says "Made in Japan" but I do not see a picture showing that on the eyepiece itself. Hopefully, it is not just the box that was made in Japan and this eyepiece was made by Vixen.

    Thanks for the information!

If most likely is a rebranded LV.
Orion sold a few Vixen made eyepieces before TeleVue took over as the only NA Vixen supplier.

I received the eyepiece yesterday. The length is exactly the same as the 6mm LV. The eye shield looks like the LV but feels as if the rubber might be a bit thinner. Looks to be a touch bigger than an LV, but I did not measure it. The look may be due to the difference in paint jobs.

As long as the view is comparable to the LV it should be a nice eyepiece.

That is what I am hoping. I plan on making whatever shims I need to make them all parfocal, if they are not already. Having them all behave pretty much the same will be a big help. I want a set of eyepieces that will go the full range of some of my scopes without the use of a separate Barlow.
