    Default A thing arrived...

Imagine my surprise! I had no idea... actually I did.

My pile of vintage Meade collectibles is now heavier by one, though I imagine this particular ocular may see less shelf and more field time than his Series II buddy. I've read good things about these so naturally I'm anxious to give it a whirl. Couple of nicks on the barrel, but the glass is good and the price was right, and that big beautiful eye lens just beckons me outside...

A five lens pseudo Masuyama? Irritatingly marketed as super Ploessels but optically very nice. Congrats.

Cool! I have not looked through one of those, just the four element versions and the 5000 series five element. Enjoy!

    Nit picking here....

The four element versions are Plossls. The five element versions are not Plossls. "Super Plossl" is not a recognized type of eyepiece design, it's marketing hype. The design is often spoken of as a Masuyama or when not made by Masuyama as a Pseudo Masuyama or Masuyama clone. It's (when you are lucky, like in this case) a design by Zeiss called the Astroplanax, with folks playing games with names.

Clear as mud, eh? The design also appears in the Takahashi LE series.

Its as clear sometimes as a shovel full of Jersey tide marsh authentic muck. Meade's marketing and product line designation certainly need an overhaul. And its not a new thing, the confusion seems to go back a ways, but at least their product history makes for some interesting reading.

I'll tell you what I'd really like to get my hands on after doing my due diligence, is one of their old research grade orthos. Those just seem to get glorious reviews from their users, but either they are getting rare or their owners are holding onto them very tight.

The Meade RG ortho seems to go in and out of fashion. Be patient as soon enough you will probably have your pick of them
If you are not finding anything after awhile just go over to that other forum and talk bad about them. People will start selling them soon after.
