Question Next EP's for my collection?

I need opinions! I picked up a Celestron EVO 925 this spring. I used the EP's it came with for most of the summer and then went ahead and bought some better EP's. As most of you know this scope is 2350mm and its F/10 which is forgiving on EPs.

    EP's I currently own:

    - 31mm Baader Aspheric
    - 21mm Baader Hyperion
    - 12mm Celestron Omni (horrible but I enjoy this mag)
    - 8mm Baader Hyperion

I don't mind spending money on a better view but I don't believe I need Etho's or anything along those lines since i'm already happy with my views out of my Hyperions compared to my cheap EP's the scope came with. The wider view with a mostly crisp image to the outer edges truly does give a better viewing experience, especially in a 925. I went back to my 40mm Plossl and it felt like I was looking through a pinhole. One thing I want to note is that I want an EP that is 2" capable without adapters. I have been informed of the ES 82 line but the lower mm EP's are 1.25" and I don't want to drag an adapter around for a single EP. Also, not that I wear glasses but ER and eye placement is important to me. I find I move around a lot while viewing.

I am personally set on a Baader Morpheus 12.5mm to fill the gap. Here is the kicker, I can get a brand new Morpheus 17.5 for $180 but the 12.5 is $240. Do I bother with the 17.5 since I already have the 21? I fear I may want to sell my 21 after the views through a Morpheus. Ahhhh

    What do you guys think?

I guess that you need to decide what magnification you want. You say you enjoy the ~200x that the 12mm Omni provides, so why would you go for a 17.5mm (134x) to replace it, which is what I assume you want to do? If it gives the magnification you are after the 12.5mm Morpheus sounds like the logical pick to me, even if it costs more.

However, I don't know of many ~12mm eyepieces other than the Baader ones that have the 2" fitting unless you go for a Nagler 12mm Type 4 which is lot more expensive (eg: https://agenaastro.com/televue-1-25-...mm-type-4.html )...

What is wrong with getting a 12mm-ish wide-field like the 13mm Nagler T6 (a magic eyepiece) or an ES 11mm and just leaving the 2" adapter on it permanently so you can simply drop it into the focuser like any 2" eyepiece? That's what I do when I want to swap quickly from a 2" to a 1 1/4" eyepiece.

    All the best,

    Dean

Morpheus are EPs which you either love or hate. I am in the "hate" camp and this is mostly because of very sensitive eye placement. You have to hold you eye perfectly still, even small eye movement causes blackouts. I could not stand it after a couple of min.

I tried Hyperion 13mm at one point and found it much more comfortable. So, if Hyperions are working for you I would just get 13mm Hyperion. I do agree that upgrading 12mm should be your first priority.

Another great option is Meade UWA 82 deg 14mm. This is very sharp and comfortable EP. No issues with ER, blackouts and eye placement.

Ok so I ended up buying a used 13mm hyperion before I even read this. It's currently in the mail on its way. I then woke up to find a Nagler 12mm T4 for sale for $220 shipped so I sent the seller an email expecting it to be sold already and it wasn't so I said I'd take it. Now I have 2 EP's on the way lol. I've heard the eye placement is finicky on this particular Nagler and I was worried that the Morpheus would be a better choice. Now that you say they have sensitive eye placement I feel better. Do you think the Nagler 12mm T4 will be the or worse than the Morpheus?

I ended up finding a used Nagler 12mm T4. Would you say this is worth it over an ES82?

It is a great eyepiece. So are the ES series, although most people would say they are not quite as good. The ES have similar specs (they should as they are basically Nagler "clones"), but probably not quite the QC or quality of coatings. Only you can make that call depending on your budget and what you can get the Nagler for. It will definitely be a "keeper"!

I think you'll like the 12mm Nagler T4 - I have one (along with the 17mm T4) and they're my favourite eyepieces. The type 4s are designed to give longer eye relief, and I find them very comfortable to use. I haven't noticed any pickiness about eye placement.

I agree that the Nagler T4's are some the easiest to view through, and best quality widefield EP's I have ever used. I only parted with them because I was wanting to go to a smaller, lighter weight lineup. Many times I have wished to have them back. I think you'll really like it.

Thanks guys I feel better about dropping 300 Cdn on a used EP. I will have to try and sell the 13mm Hyperion now and I haven't even received it yet lol. At least this way I can compare the hyperion to the Nagler and see the difference.

That sounds like a reasonable price anyway. New price for the 12mm T4 here in Oz is $A580, or $C545. I always feel around 60% of the new price is a good starting point for a well-kept used lens or scope.

Let's hear how the comparison goes.

    Enjoy!
