Default new eyepieces required for skywatcher 1145p

hi there, im a total newbie so go easy..... lol

the eyepieces that i have are the stock 25mm and 10mm and the stock 2x barlow, i am wanting to upgrade the eyepieces and barlow, whilst i only paid a bargain £40 for the scope and the goto mount i am happy to pay a few hundred for eyepieces and a barlow or a couple of hundred for a single eyepeice and barlow, as i can always use those on the next scope i will no doubt buy

the scope has a 114mm aperture and a 500mm focal length so a baby really, looking for info on what size eyepiece will work with my scope and eventually a larger one (perhaps a 250mm or 300mm reflector)

as i sa im a total newbie so my thoughts are an alround scope until i see what i fancy, defo want to look close up at the moon and the planets would be good too, i cant say at this stage im too fussed of looking at stars that a pretty visable to the naked eye but who knows in the future

    thanks

I spend more on eyepieces than telescopes as eyepieces can be used in many scopes just be careful getting very short ones like 3, 4,or even 5 mm ones as they have limited use once you upgrade your scope generally a good 10mm will be good for most scopes I have many eyepieces now but a good value is the celestron x cell LX range I would get a 10mm one and perhaps a 2x Barlow for your current f4.3 scope , that way the eyepiece will work well in other scopes you may get later

I'll have a look at them, i wasnt going too small on them either, from what ive read a 9 or 10 is about the limit for any decent viewing on my current scope

    thanks

Generally the shortest eyepiece is your Focal ration in your scope its a 5mm, thats why I suggested a 10mm with a 2x barlow

does the barlow half the eyepiece as well as double the telescope focal length then?

A 2× barlow doubles the focal length of the telescope, which is essentially the same as saying it halves the focal length of the eyepiece. But it does not do both at the same time.

    This scope has a focal length of 500mm. 500 (scope) / 10 (eyepiece) = 50×.

Doubling the scope focal length with the barlow is 1000 / 10 = 100×.

ok thanks, just got confused by you saying about the shortest eyepiece being 5mm so use a 10mm with a 2x barlow, i assume you meant it halves the 10mm EP too, thanks

i have been doing a little thinking and i may look at some 2" eyepieces as i think i may end up getting a skywatcher explorer 200 or 250 DS and they are 2" ready, assuming i can squeeze one of those on my synscan mount (may need to modify the dovetail a touch to space it out so it clears the motor cover
