Default Which Barlow 2x is best for under $75

    Hi All,

I am in search for a 2x barlow and my budget is under $75. I already have a 3x celestron x-cell and can't do much with my current 2 eyepieces 10mm &15mm 70 Deg. SWA FMC by Gosky, at least for the moon as that is the only thing I was observing since I started in this past fall and now the main planets are coming into my ideal vieiwng spot and time. My telescope is a Celestron 127 eq. So I figure since I invested $150 in the EP's I'd rather go for a smaller barlow to have less magnification then the 3x untill I get a new scope.

I got to go through Amazon since I have gift money in there and so far My choices are:

    Orion 08711 Shorty 1.25-Inch 2x $50ish

    Celestron 93529 X-Cel LX 1.25-Inch 2x Barlow Lens $70

I am open for other suggestions and my main use is for planet observation. Also I would like the barlow to support a higher FOV out of the 2 since I am using wide angle EPs and be good for taking photos with my smartphone.

    Thanks in Advanced

Do a search on Amazon for this barlow: https://agenaastro.com/gso-1-25-2x-a...rlow-lens.html (I found it but the price was in CDN funds)
It is sold and ships from Agena Astro either way and is just as good as the others.

I'm pretty sure the Orion is Barsta made, it is similar to the GSO Gabby mentions.

I personally prefer the GSO as I think the thumb screw in the drawtube is firmer and bigger.

The lens element can be unthreaded to be directly threaded into an individual eyepiece (for 1.6x magnification), and the body can be utilised as an extension tube.

The X-Cel is a bit different and has a three element lens, very probably apochromatic, and also features a compression ring. I don't think the element is removable. For value for money I'd recommend the GSO, for larger, wider angle eyepieces personally I'd go for the X-Cel.

The Celestron X-Cel is good for under that price. Look on Astromart for used gear as well.

I believe all three have the same clear aperture of 23mm but I may be wrong.

I just found this that says the clear aperture of the X-Cel is only 18.1mm :https://agenaastro.com/celestron-1-2...ens-93529.html

I just tried to measure my X-Cel, it looks more like 23mm to me. It's a very light Barlow considering its size and shape. If you don't mind compression rings I believe it would be more stable with larger eyepieces. I think it is a true apo.

Thanks all, I saw the GSO on amazon for $36 usd free shipping. Now the debate between the GSO and the xcell. I do like the wider since I am using a 70 deg.. but I like the price of the GSO if it will perform just as well. I don't mind paying the extra money for the x-cell if it will make a difference with a wider view and would be better for images.

    Thanks Again

Go with the GSO it has a wider clear aperture than the X-Cel, also the lens element can be removed and attached directly to an eyepiece for 1.5x magnification.

I just did some looking around on other sites and found the X-Cel listed at 18, 19 and 27mm clear aperture... I would say it is probably under 20mm from what I have found so far.

I don't think Agena are right about the clear aperture of the X-Cel, and it is also apochromatic. If it is smaller, it isn't by that much. It doesn't mean it will give inferior views anyway, especially if it is a better quality element. I always thought it was a very good Barlow.

It would be physically more stable and secure with larger eyepieces (I have the 3x as well).

There's nothing wrong with the GSO though. Probably time to toss a coin.

The X-Cel has a compression ring and the GSO has a removable cell, all depends on what would be handier for your style of viewing.

The difference between a 2x 2 element and a 2x 3 element is you paid more for the 3 element. The optical difference between the two at 2x is almost zero.
Do not misunderstand me SB, I am not commenting on the view with the X-Cel in the least, only the clear aperture. Both barlows give good/ identical views.
