    Cool Yep, another EP set!

My favorite pass time under the clouds is researching EPs you "really need", hunting for good deals on-line, getting them, and finally setting up photo shoots.

It started with 4mm. I have a few in 4-5mm range, but! They either have painfully short eye relief, or too heavy for the Baader EP turret. Clever right? Vixen NLV and SLV meet light weight/long ER requirements, and it so happened first reply to my add was 4mm SLV.

I was so impressed with it performance in Onyx 80ED, so I started looking for more. Next came 15mm of CN, and I liked it even more in ES 127CF APO. And then Vixen put them on hefty sale (~35% off), was that a sign or what?! I picked 9mm and 20mm for 8" SCT, and a month later caved in and grab another two on the last day of sale. Next day Vixen has extended the sale till June, but that's OK.

Thus, behold my new Vixen SLV set!

In the last three months I had a few occasions to test them in 80mm ED and 127mm APO fracs and 8" SCT. When Vixen says high contrast/high transmission - no kidding! From my albeit not dark patio it was on pair with my best Orthos and Plossls. Add well balanced neutral tones and very sharp focus, and you get a deadly all purpose combo. Once again from my patio they beat on few occasions premium Orthos and Plossls.

I keep saying from my patio, because it is quite light polluted, so I expect at the dark site low count premium glass to have a bit of advantage on very faint targets. But that remains to be seen.

From home I already set a few personal best for splitting doubles with SLVs. Part of the success could be that 20mm eye relief lets me observe very comfortably with glasses on. Since I am forced to take glasses off for short ER EPs, what I perceived before as sharp focus in Orthos and Plossls (and even some of ES82s) was uncorrected for astigmatism. I have pretty complex eye prescription. Now with vision properly corrected and eyes more relaxed I get even sharper focus and better resolution. This is working hypothesis for now, but it could be that SLVs are in fact sharper. I read some reports that they perform to the same level as Baader Genuine Orthos on planets.

Vixen also improved twisted eye guard design compared to NLVs. Now you can dial in as much or little as you need and it actually stays in place. This helps to block stray light and adds to contrast.

I was a bit apprehensive about 50 deg FOV and 20mm ER combo at first. In the past I found 50 deg in short FL eyepieces too restrictive. On the other hand I have tested and returned a few ~70 deg 20mm ER EPs (Delos and Morpheus notably), because very sensitive eye placement and resulting blackouts drove me nuts. But SLVs feel very natural and relaxed to me.

I have yet to do a serious galaxy hunting session with them. There 50 deg FOV in a manual scope could be a handicap. However, I feel with EP turret it is a lesser issue, since I can hunt for targets at lower power and flip in higher power EP for closer look.

Anyway, highly recommend this EP line. They are not just Plossls with longer ER, but well designed and executed premium EP in compact/lightweight category.

Very nice! You can't go wrong with Vixen. The ER is indeed attractive, and it's nice to hear they perform to the high standards that Vixen always delivers. Congrats!

Thanks, to me they seem very much like large orthoscopics, with the same level of brightness, overall sharpness and contrast. The 45° FOV isn’t much more than an ortho’ but their bigger field stops compensate. I’ve been told they can suffer from internal reflections on bright targets, such as the Moon. I’ve only used them as planetary EP’s so far though.
