Default Suggestions on a diagonal - I know zilch! :P

    Hey all,

First off, sorry mods if this is in the incorrect forum:

So after changing my mind countless times, I believe I settled on a scope to pull the trigger on. Just days ago, I was rather settled on the ES 102CF then changed it to the non-CF model due to a couple factors and now after opting to go with what I believe is a superior focuser and superior glass, the SV 102A doublet. Visually, I have read/heard nothing but very promising things but on the AP side, Iíve come up with little. Anyway, as you all know, the OTA is sold without a diagonal, though youíre given an option to include one as a discounted package. I have been told that descernible differences between cheap and expensive diagonals often times is very slight and to spend my $$ on other things. Is this true? The SV diagonal looks good but is there not another, perhaps cheaper option? I donít mind spending $100-$200 on a diagonal if it benefits the viewing but saving money would be nice too! Also, do I opt for the 1.25 or 2Ē? I see no mention of a 2Ē-1.25Ē adapter on SV or other sites for there diagonals. I do plan on using a mix of 1.25Ē and 2Ē EPs so having a diagonal than can accommodate both is a must. Thank you all again for the input. You kind folks have made many decisions so much easier for me and Iíve enjoyed learning the ins and outs of everything with your informative answers and guidance.

Use a prism diagonal with refractors and mirror diagonals with scopes that use mirrors. SCT, Newtonian ect ect. A simple Celestron prism diagonal turned out to work the best for me.

Diagonal is a part of light path, so quality is important. I would strongly recommend to go with 2", they all come with 1.25" adapters.

Based on my experience with APO refractors I suggest to get dielectric mirror diagonal. I have Celestron, Orion, ES and GSO brands, they all perform equally well in my scopes. So, select one with a good price.

Ozman suggested couple of good options.

All the previous suggestions are good and cannot be said to shirk on optical quality. I have diagonals from SV, Baader, Celestron in 2" and Vixen in 1.25" that I can recommend. Others I'll keep quiet on.

Congratulations on the SV 102A. I have the 80 and it's the most perfect optics I've ever used.

Are you speaking of Celestronís XLT line?

I have heard that Dielectric was the right choice for refractors so thank you (and Leveye) for pointing that out. I certainly do not wish to sacrifice quality so Iím with you there. I also did not know that they all come with adapters

So, I think Iíll stick with the SV one thatís included in the package discount. It is after all a savings of $50 putting the ďcostĒ of the diagonal at $139 instead of $189. The GSO mentioned by Ozman has a tempting price of only $100 but the hassle of ordering a diagonal separately from the scope to save $30 doesnít seem worth the trouble. Knowing my luck, the diagonal would show up days later after I get everything else and I wonít be able to play with my shiny new scope.

nFA, donít get me wrong, and I donít think you do, I would never wished to sacrifice quality to save a few dollars. Iím already so far over my initial budget of $2,000 and even now, Iím forcing myself to settle on what I think is good enough for now instead of what is the best. This is something I believe we all have in common. When my rig gets here I will surely share it with all of you, for I have been wanting a serious scope since 1999 and been wanting to get into AP since 2014. Thankfully for me, my wife is completely on board and is as excited as I am. You all have been so wonderful with guiding me in the right direction. I often come on here after reading hours upon hours of specs and my head is completely spinning and numb with information and you folks so elegantly set my mind at ease. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely thank you all for your input, guidance and honesty. Iíll have many more questions to come particularly when it comes time to start taking photos!

Looking at the specs on SV site, sounds like a good quality diagonal and $139 is not a bad price.
