1-1-3 lens grouping. Eye lens top is concave. Field lens group has a flat bottomed last lens. The last group's first lens is highly convex.

    Maybe a modified Konig?

I think your guess that it's a modification of a Konig design is pretty good. To be more sure we'd need to know the glass types. The eye relief is right. The mechanical profile also is very reminiscent of the Konigs that were sold by University Optics.

It's interesting, I suppose it was going to be something like a Konig or a modified Erfle. All this disassembling is giving me flashbacks to my childhood when I seemed to have a compulsion to take stuff to pieces. lol

Well it's interesting. I'd heard that the GSO Superviews were of Erfle heritage. You've disproved that.

I was also told they were Erfles, some of them might be. The 15mm and 20mm are quite different internally. When I was about eight eventually my dad bought me a Meccano set. He also got me an educational optics set from Germany, it taught me a fair bit about optics before I was eleven years old lol. When I was a teenager I disassembled a small refractor I owned, it was never the same after lol.

I may tackle it myself, though I've read once you take these things apart and put them back together they are never the same after. I rather like my 30mm SV, though honestly it hasn't seen any use since the 24mm Meade arrived.

All of the ones I've disassembled had something wrong with them, so I wasn't that bothered to be honest. The trick in putting them back together is making sure that all of the elements are the right way around and in the correct order. Furthermore, also making sure you don't damage, dirty or smudge the individual elements in the process.

Personally, if the 30mm is in good nick (condition) and if you really like the eyepiece, I'd leave it assembled. I've borked plenty of eyepieces just trying to clean them!

At the minimum it might explain why SuperView owners like myself assert they perform well in fast newts, where Erfles are not really supposed to. Because they're not Erfles. They're phony Erfles. Pherfles.
